Need openions

I recently finished 6 rounds of chemo and im suppose to be starting radiation soon, im just so scared because the tumor was in my left breast which means the radiation will be very close to my heart, i had a lumpectomy and the nodes were all clear, im only 23 years old and i dont want to get radiation and have heart problems later on, plus the type of cancer i had was medullary which most of the time has a good outcome, and usually dosent spread, i just dont know what to do, my onc says i must have it done but, i hadmy first consultation today with the radiation dr and she kinda scared me a little, saying that since i was so young i had a good chance of later in life having some side effects from the treatment, is there anyone out there that has had radiation on theleft side and is doing good after a couple years??

Yamaira-It breaks my heart to see somone so young going through breast cancer. I didnt do rads but know of a lot of women who had rads and are doing great. there is a thread here with a lot of younger women who are doing good, maybe you can talk to them and see how they are dealing with this too. Btw, my daughter was young too when she was DX with BC and doing very well. If you go to the right hand side search engine you can type in young women with breast cancer, it might be called "Any one in there 20's" I will go find it and let you know.

    Sending gentle hugs and prayers.

Even though it was medullay, your young age and ER-PR- factors make it an aggressive cancer. Radiation was easier then chemo or surgery for me. On the left breast they do some of the radiation by the side of the breast to help protect the heart. Major heart problems are usually rare from radiation.

Yumaira, you might want to find out if there is a facility near you that does rads in the prone (facce down) position. This is done to minimize SEs, especially to the heart.

    Best of luck.
