Found a tiny lump, what to do??

Hi,

I'm new to this forum but not new to breast cancer.  My mother (and her aunt, my great aunt) had breast cancer, my mother died from it at age 51, my great aunt was 49.  I've had bilateral breast biopsies done 11 years ago for microcals.

I had a BI-RADS category 3 mammo in 2009 due to new clusters of microcals in my left breast (I have clips in my left breast from the biopsy).  Now I have found a tiny (the size of a pencil point) lump on my left breast on the outer middle portion. It feels like a tiny skin tag, but of course, with my history, it scares me!

I have had it for a few weeks and there has been no change. I am wondering if I should make an appointment with my doctor to have it checked out, or should I wait till my next mammogram (which isn't until October). I am 49 and 10 years post-menopause (went through menopause naturally at age 39).

Thanks,

Jen

The odds are that it's nothing, Jen, but make an appt anyway to give yourself some peace of mind.  Good luck!

If it was me, I would absolutely see a doctor now.  How would you feel if you waited 8 more months and it turned out at that point to be something?  That being said it may very well turn out to be nothing - but if you see a doctor now you will not spend the next 8 months thinking about it and worrying about it.  You know you are high risk - I don't see any advantage to waiting.

I agree with the others go and get your peace of mind. It will be a long 6 months otherwise, right? And you'll be constantly checking the site and with benign things like papillomas in ducts, constant checking and squeezing can cause more problems.  I am sorry for the loss of your Mom and aunt.  Hugs to you!

I am sorry for your losses...that' s got to be resonating.

Most lumps are nothing..but with your family history and the benign stuff you've had, why not get some peace of mind and check it out?  Waitng 6 months will be awful, worrying about it.

    If nothing...wonderful.

If something, wonderful.  You caught it in time.

    Take care of you!!

Thank you so much for all your replies! I have decided to make an appointment with my GYN to get it checked out. The texture of my skin close to this little lump seems different as well, very, uh, granular, I guess is the best word. This is a change, because I do my breast exams religiously and I have never felt that before. My right breast does not feel like this. So yes, definitely getting this checked out for my peace of mind.

    Will let you guys know!

    Thanks again,

    Jen

Best of luck, let us know how it goes. Good for you for staying vigilant!  Enjoy the weekend and remember "it is what it is", nothing you can do about it right now so rest, eat well and be good to yourself!
