G'day to all the Aussie sheilas!

Some of us on the Australian Sisters thread have been talking about having a social get together to put faces to names we have met on this site and generally to have a convivial time and maybe make some new friends.

As we are scattered across the country, we thought that Adelaide would be a central place to meet and we are thinking of having the event around the end of June, when two of our group will be finished chemo (yay!).

There are a few ladies in or near Adelaide who hopefully can suggest a good venue.

So this thread is for you to indicate if you are interested in attending and to share any ideas about activities that we could do together. Again, the SA ladies may have some ideas.

Everyone is welcome - the more the merrier.

And check out the Australian Sisters thread. It's in the chemo forum.

    Racy!  Found it! lol

Well I'm open to whatever suits everyone else.  But will Jenn and Kate be finished rads by then?

    Good question Trish.

Are we talking about a weekend event? Maybe fly in Saturday morning. Meet up and do something touristy in the afternoon, dinner? Then breakfast/brunch on Sunday and maybe something else touristy or free time?

Adelaide ladies, where do you suggest?

    Hi Vivvygirl!

Bonjour Marie-Edith! Peut-être nous pouvions parler un peu en Français?

I'll follow this thread on the off chance that I'll be able to make this. It will have to be a last minute decision for me due to treatment still going then...

I see 23 June was mentioned. I may have a conflicting birthday party that weekend but it's not a huge problem. I am aware that Sue is checking dates for her planned trip to Adelaide.

Trish, do you think ladies doing rads might not be up to travel? Jenn and Kate MUST be there!

Jenn, when would be better for you? It would be a shame if you couldn't come :-( .

I'm not sure how rads affect you - I never had them.  Jenn and Kate will have to decide how they are feeling though.

I would have to do a weekend stint - I work full time, so getting in on a Sat morning and home on Sun afternoon would work well for me.

I'll be in the Perth vicinity in early August.  Is anyone close by?

Hey, I was just thinking. Normally there is a break of about 4 weeks between finishing chemo and starting rads so late June might work for you Jenn. Not that I am meaning to pressure you.

Yes, I was thinking the same Racy which is why I haven't discounted it. I just won't know how I will be until I'm at that time-point... More than happy to do a last minute booking if it does turn out to be possible.

Racy, I'm coming over for vaycay in Aug with a friend.  I have no idea where Bunbury is!  I can get to the train from the airport and that's about it!

Oh, so you are in US? Bunbury is a few hours south of Perth.

I'm in!!!   What do you girls like to do?  I was thinking we could go for dinner sonewhere in Gouger Street which has all sorts of restaurants and then catch a tram down to Glenelg for coffee.......and chats of course........lol.   Or I can see whats on at the Festival theatre at that time but that will be expensive.

She, what a shame you can't join us!

Excellent ideas Chrissy! I like them. :-)

What's a good hotel near Gouger street? How late does the tram run? After 12 lol?

I would be interested to know about cultural events. Maybe a matinée.

Looks like another big holiday year for me. Europe, Adelaide and Uluru shortly after. Why not after all I have been through!

I'll check out what's coming on the events calendar and let you know.  The tram runs quite late so no probs there and the Hilton hotel which is the one Sue suggested is right around the corner from Gouger Street.

I still can't get Annie on the phone. I'll keep trying.

I know a really great restaurant in King William Street called Melt - THE MOST FANTASTIC TAPAS EVER!!!!

The Hilton was quite nice but old - if I remember it was reasonably priced. I liked it because it's right next to the markets.

The tram stop is right across the road from the Hilton and runs down King William Street so trandport iis no probs and walking is not too far either.  Gouger Street is an easy walk from the hilton even for me who will still be recovering from the knee replacement.

I can ask my DD2 for good restaurants as she is always going out to dinner and really likes good food and value for money.

Finally spoke to Annie - we've agreed I'll come to Adlelaide on June 20th and stay maybe until mid the following week or even the following weekend. She wants me to come when the DHead SIL is still at work, so we can have time for just us. He's off from the 30th. If I stay with them, I'd have to sleep on a mattress on the floor - not ideal. Trouble is, how much will the Hilton cost me for that long. I'll do some research. Maybe I can stay in a cheap motel and go to the Hilton for the weekend.

I've decided to book the flights tomorrow.

If that weekend is not suitable for all of you, that's OK. I have to be there anyway.

Sue if we get numbers, perhaps we could do a group booking for the Hilton for the weekend which would make it cheaper for everyone.  I'll make some enquiries and let everyone know.

Spent hours last night searching hotel rates - depressing prices for me if I stay 8 nights.

Ok - I had to book my flights as the cheap prices with Qantas were rapidly disappearing. I'm coming to Adelaide on Monday 18th June and will stay until Wednesday 27th June - not sure where yet, my hotel searches are proving very frustrating. Steve has said he wants me to stay somewhere nice so he might fork out for the Hilton :)

    Have you looked at these?

Whenever I go somewhere I always look for boutique hotels rather than big chain ones.

Thanks Jenn - I'll have a look. We did stay at a Majestic there once before, but the current price for it is quite expensive.

I'm not a fan of the Hilton in Adelaide - unless they've updated it drastically in the last few years.  I had a job where I travelled Australia extensively and always had bad experiences at the Hilton.  I much prefer the Intercontinental across the road.  Much, much nicer and the price is comparable.

Mind you I couldn't afford to stay at either one these days lol

Trish - I'll look at that one. I thought one on King William st would be good as the tram runs down it. The Majestic Roof Garden was nice but now more expensive than the Hilton. I only like the Hilton because it's next to the markets and the bus to Annie's is across the road. The Ambassador on King William bears further investigation. I did find a place down the end of Gouger St - only 89 a night but I would prefer to closer to the City Centre.

For 9 nights, the Hilton would cost me 1,500 odd - why doesn't my DD have a spare bed????

Sue - they moved the Hilton! lol  It used to be right next door to the Casino.  Wonder what that hotel is called now?!
