Surgery to Chemo?

My little sister was recently diagnosed with Breast Cancer and is having a masectomy on the 17th. I live in Texas and she is in Nevada and I am having issues figuring out when the best time to be there in person for her will be. From the survivors I have spoken with, everyone thinks that it would be best to go home when she starts chemo. She doesn't even see the darn oncologist til 2 weeks after surgery. Can anyone tell me how long after surgery before they typically start chemo so I can book a darn flight?

I started my chemo about 3 weeks after my surgery (officially saw onc at 2 weeks).  I would agree that I needed company and support more during chemo than after my surgery.  Just being there to help with laundry, groceries, or bringing a cold drink.  You are a great sister to want to be there.

Her onc will tell her but the most common time period is about 4-6 weeks.  Her surgeon needs to be sure she is sufficiently healed from surgery, once she starts chemo she will heal no further.  Does she have anyone with her for the surgery?

Will the airlines cut you some slack on this one? i.e. are these valid medical conditions where they will waive the fee to change a flight, if you have to?  Not sure what your sched or $ situation is like, but BC can be a journey, so a couple of shorter visits could be nice, too. (one for surgery, one mid-way through chemo?)
