Paps and Mammos at Walgreens!
http://gawker.com/5791100/watch-stephen-colberts-defense-of-planned-parenthood
My intention is not to beat a dead horse but did anyone see this? It's new to me and though hilarious, I just cannot believe what our government "representatives" and "news" channels get away with! I find it beyond disturbing!! I'm over the PP issue, will never get over the lying jerks passing themselves off as informed newspeople.
That FOX news is beyond...I can't even.....

-
Yep, saw the Colbert episode and sighed at the Faux Gnus excerpt.....
-
Very very funny by Stephen Colbert, very unfunny by Fox and Kyl.
-
This was too funny!
-
Well, it's not so far-fetched. There are clinics inside many retail drug stores now, including Walgreen's, and while I am certain you cannot get a mammo there, I'm not sure about Paps. Probably not, though, since there are still plenty of places for that at low cost.
Nonetheless, Stephen Colbert is a national treasure. I love that guy!
-
LOL - thanks for sharing this. I have to go set up The Colbert Report on my dvr now. He is so funny. My friend recently posted on Facebook, "Get your news on Comedy Central; get your comedy on Fox News." Sad, but true. I don't think anything said on Fox News is intended to be a factual statement.
I so want to go to Walgreens and ask for a pap smear. What? You don't do those here? They said you did on Fox and Friends... omg so ridiculous.
-
Your friend couldn't be closer to the truth! So much so that I may have to post that on my
FB page! Believe me, I am the first person on line for hardy laughs and surely this clip provided that! However, I loathe the fact that Fox even exists at this point! Of course they do because many people watch it. I'll refrain from offering my thoughts on their audience in general and concentrate on those that would take this particular issue as truth. Whether it's not too far off or not, Walgreens
provides neither of these services!
Unfortunately, there are a lot of individuals who are uninformed and take as fact anything they hear. As the clip on Kyle so clearly shows AND from the comments of some on the Koman- PP issue thread, too many believe PP is primarily servicing abortions. When you have a
large audience of people who cannot or will not do their own research, who better to quote and "side with" than a US Representative? I realize there is nothing that can be done about ignorance. I just get all knotted up when the media feeds it.OK then....I'm off my soap box. Glad you enjoyed the laughs. Nothing better
than a hardy guffaw! -
"Ladies, just look for the stirrups..."
Colbert really slays me!
-
It was a great piece.
There are people who will always swallow what some politician waving his bias banner puts up as fact.
-
What stirrups??? My Walgreens just lays us out on big boxes and this overweight clone of Colbert throws a plastic tablecloth over us and goes to work! At least "he" uses the gel my former unprofessional gyn refused to use in me. And he wondered why I blasted him in the best Sicilian temper I could come up with!
I once when I was having an "out of brain" experience told my new lady gyn why did she want to spend her life with her head looking up women's private parts when she seemed like she could do much better than that. Well this is true! We all got letters from her the next month that she was retiring and we had to find a new gyn! And she really was a good gyn for a woman! We hated to lose her. I was really trying to compliment her! Think about what a gyn does. I know someone has to do it but I expect "men" to be willing to spend their lives doing that but we women should strive for something better! (If anyone on here is a woman gyn, please don't take my post personal. I am on Arimidex long term and not responsible for my actions or my words. Thanks!)
-
MediPAL - LOL!
-
Fox can, indeed, report news. We can, likewise, laugh at them and offer criticism. Even, Steven, so far.
A problem, as you may know, is that they're often inaccurate and deliberately provocative. Fine, if that's what you choose, but, just as you have the right to watch, we have the write to watch Stephen Colbert. He does make a point in a humorous way and it's relevant to many of us who are posting here.
You may want to watch the clip. It's funny!
-
Peacock-I am loving your reasonable and rational posts.

Just when I thought this thread died...alas it returns with some added controversy.
Birdlady: This thread title has nothing to do with negativity coming up??? Um, well for one, those individuals on the clip from FOX "news" offered that Walgreens provides paps and mammos when in FACT, they do not. Once again, they tailor what information they serve up to fit their conservative agenda truth be damned! Just like that Congressman digging up (from his rear end) some ridiculous and UNTRUE statistic about what PP does. And when called on it, oh well gee, he didn't mean it to be fact...Are you kidding me "sir?" He did his job though, he stirred the fury of the conservative masses, many of whom just blindly believe anything that is anti PP. No need to bother fact checking for themselves....they heard it out of the mouth of the Congressman. Or, from the stellar liars at Fox. Yes, Fox has a right to say whatever but to call that "News" is digusting. I'd have no problem if they called it Fox entertainment. Responsible "news" reporting is all about facts and truth.
So yes, I find that not just negative, but downright manipulative and wrong! How in the world can you defend that?
And now, a great John Stewart clip to serve as an example...it IS hilarious! I hope it links...

It's good to have a chance to laugh at this stuff, especially after coming across this downer story in the New York Times yesterday:
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/08/us/texas-womens-clinics-retreat-as-finances-are-cut.html
-
Ann .. thanks for the link. What a sad article. I copied the following paragraphs from the article.
"But the clinic closed in October, along with more than a dozen others in the state, after financing for women's health was slashed by two-thirds by the Republican-controlled Legislature.
The cuts, which left many low-income women with inconvenient or costly options, grew out of the effort to eliminate state support for Planned Parenthood. Although the cuts also forced clinics that were not affiliated with the agency to close - and none of them, even the ones run by Planned Parenthood, performed abortions - supporters of the cutbacks said they were motivated by the fight against abortion.
Now, the same sentiment is likely to lead to a shutdown next week of another significant source of reproductive health care: the Medicaid Women's Health Program, which serves 130,000 women with grants to many clinics, including those run by Planned Parenthood. Gov. Rick Perry and Republican lawmakers have said they would forgo the $35 million in federal money that finances the women's health program in order to keep Planned Parenthood from getting any of it. "
Obviously, Gov. Perry has never been a poor woman before. Maybe he should walk a day in our shoes and see what it feels like to be a woman with no insurance and maybe no income due to job cuts.
Bren
-
I know, Bren. Today, Gov. Perry is saying the state of Texas will come up with that $35 million themselves, but he's not saying how. And the money won't go as far if they're not using the existing infrastructure of PP clinics. Notice how PP performs NO abortions in Texas, but Texas wants to cut them off from all funding anyway.
-
Ann .. I saw that abortion wasn't even part of the equation. Texans should be proud of themselves! NOT!
I wonder if the Medicaid Women's Health Program also includes cuts to the Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program. That is a medicaid funded program. Thank God for Bill Clinton for signing that law in 2002 that made it possible for uninsured and underinsured women to get treatment and screening for breast and cervical cancer.

I think this just portrays the sad reality of today's society where people feel they can say whatever they want, be it partial truth or no truth whatsoever to promote their viewpoint. What happened to truth and honesty? One would think that when you are on television or radio a person would research what they say, or at least state it as an opinion or thought, rather then fact.
And to those that think that only the conservative republicans are capable of such behavior need to think again. Planned Parenthood's own president is on record re guarding proposed funding cuts to PP as saying, "millions of women are going to lose access, not to abortion services, to basic family planning, you know, mammograms.", when in fact PP does not provide mammograms. This in fact is a twist of the facts to promote her cause. Both sides are guilty of this poor behavior. Very sad, to say the least.
-
Once again, many women get referrals for mammograms through Planned Parenthood. And would have a tough time getting their mammograms otherwise.
-
Planned Parenthood does not provide mammograms .. they provide referrals to other sites so that women can get the mammograms they need.
Bren
-
Faye ... this is the link to the article you quoted. I found that publication to be very right wing in it's views. Planned Parenthood may not do mammograms at their clinics, but they do provide the funding for women to get them elsewhere.
Bren
-
(1) My doctor gives me the referral I have to have to go for a mammogram
(2) I go to the hospital/facility that actually does the mammogram and a tech plops me onto the machine and a radiologist reads the film
(3) My insurance company pays for it
Planned Parenthood does Steps 1 and 3 above ... both of which are required to make Step 2 happen. It's beyond splitting hairs to say that PP does not 'provide' mammograms just because they don't have the machine in their clinic.
I agree that what passes for journalism/ news reporting these days is pitiful. I'm old enough to remember when it was obvious that an interviewer studied their subject prior to an interview. And if somebody started spouting a bunch of nonsense they got called on it on the spot. The person got a chance to explain and/or defend their statements but couldn't just talk gibberish knowing that nobody would even question it as they can and do now.
-
My point is, people are misleading others to cultivate their agendas. PP's president should have stated her concern was that women would lose their referral to a mammogram or the funding for a mammogram. Instead she lumped mammograms in with other services PP does offer (family planning and abortion). It was a misleading statement.
-
No more misleading than saying your doctor provides a mammogram. For many women, PP is the only affordable access to a mammogram.
-
No referral - no funding = no mammogram.
It is only a misleading statement if you desperately want it to be and are willing to twist like a pretzel to make it so. IMO
-
It seems to be the reality that those who are the most ignorant and uneducated about what happens and doesn't happen at PP clinics -- because they have never been to one -- always have the most to say about what happens and doesn't happen. What is said and what isn't said.
With the expectation that what they say will be accepted by everyone else as factually true and 100% reliable.
It is a fact that for a great number of women, their breast cancer screenings and other breast health related concerns are addressed in their visits to PP.
I do hope no one would be so cruel to another woman in this nation so as to interfere with or in any way deny that woman access to the medical attention each needs.
There is no breast cancer which chooses up political sides or favors a particular economic class of women or prefers short women or tall women or left handed women or red headed women or starts on alternate numbered Tuesdays as long as they don't occur during Lent or any such gibberish.
It's shameful that there is any discussion at all about making any woman the target of the stupid political and religious exploitation of females that was finally (at least some of us thought so) extinguished during my mother's generation.
-
"My point is, people are misleading others to cultivate their agendas.'
EXACTLY! Faye...And such is the very sorry state of our media (ergo our society) in its current state. And I absolutely agree that these tactics are not used exclusively by those promoting a conservative agenda. The unspoken premise of saying/doing whatever it takes to get the desired result is a common practice of both sides of our government and cemented with the endless amounts of pundits taking up air time on the hundreds of 24/7 media outlets. Dishonesty in politics is not a historically new concept, but neither was it a given as it is today. The ability to manipulate, deceive and have access to boatloads of money is a prerequisite to enter politics today. In the generations prior to the baby boom, there was little reason for the majority of people to not cultivate the innate sense of patriotism for our "for the people, by the people" system of government. Unfortunately and I think dangerously, "trust in the government" is an oxymoron. The proportion of irony of which would really be funny if it weren't so disturbing.
"It's shameful that there is any discussion at all about making any woman the target of the stupid political and religious exploitation of females that was finally (at least some of us thought so) extinguished during my mother's generation."
Eloquently as usual, Pompeed states the glaring reason why the conservatives are currently the target of such wrath. I don't understand how ANY woman living and breathing cannot feel incredibly threatened by this agenda. If not, then other than lacking a penis, they might as well be male. Truthfully, I never saw myself (nor did my feminist friends) as one to buck the system in seeking more rights for women entering adulthood in the late 70's. Being the first in our "group" to get married, taking his last name was a non issue for me. My feminist friends were horrified that I would (by their account) become his "chattel." Innately, I felt that no job was so important to me to replace what I wanted to do when I became a Mom. We lived without a lot of things (including regret) until my youngest went to school. Very traditional right?
Fast forward to 2012 and I feel like Gloria Steinham has entered my body! Precisely because of this conservative agenda. Insulting to me, frightening for the future of my daughters. If someone can explain to me HOW in God's name they are comfortable with a bunch of dishonest, egotistical and backward thinking MEN making ANY decision about a woman's control of her body, I'd love to hear how. Regardless of the issue at hand, HOW is that anywhere near OK?
-
It's not OK.
I'm 60 and still remember in my early adulthood (early 70s) when women were still treated as second class citizens in a lot of respects. Not that much further back it was much much worse. We're not going to let a relatively small group of men who liked it better that way take us back there.
The intrusions into our personal medical decisions is an assault on our right to control our own lives and health. There are women who approve of the 'old ways' and they are free to live that way in their own personal lives. Just don't try to force the rest of us into that box too ... we get to decide for ourselves.
Women are angels ...
But if you break our wings ...
We will continue to fly ...
On a broomstick ...
We are flexible like that.
Nobody should be surprised that we are firing up our broomsticks.
