A new thought on research....
Hi everyone,
I'm new(ish) here. Ive been lurking for a few months reading a lot about research (or the lack there of) that is currently been going on. I truly believe that a lot of the research that is occurring sounds promising, and hope with all my heart that a cure is not too far in the future. While reading about all of the current research that is taking place I keep wondering about one thing. Are any researchers looking at why there are different types of bc? For example, why does onevperson have er+ and another er-? Trust me, I get that treatment options currently available differ depending on these factors. But why the differences in the first place. I know and understand that none of did anything specific to cause our cancers, but the differences must exist for a reason. For this cancer to develop, something must gomwrong in our bodies. Something causes these cells to grow out of control.
Overall, my thoughts are this:
1. Our cancers are not our fault.
2. Looking at all of the risk factors, nothing explains what causes only one person out of two that have identical everything to develop the cancer.
3. With Koen in the news the last week, it really has me thinking multiple things. One poster on here, and I apologize because I cannot remember or find who it was stated the following: "enough with awareness, it's time for a care". This touched me deeply and caused tears to stream down my face. Awareness is great for early detection, but clearly prevention in the first place is best. Research needs to be proactive in finding this cure.
4. Not only does research need to be proactive in prevention, it also needs to be rective in research. So many moms, daughters, sister, best friends, etc. have been lost entirely too soon. Research needs to focus on the CURE NOW. To help sisters at al stages battle this disease.
I know it may seem like I am rambling, but if researchers really look at the issue across all stages, including those that are yet to be diagnosed, I believe that is whether the true answer lies. Something allowed these cells to grow uncontrollably. The key is understanding what allowed this to happen in the first place, for all types of bc. If we understand that, we can either fix the problem and/ or control/starve these cells no matter where in the body they are located.
I'm going to go ahead and post and then walk away for a little bit. I'll come back and see if I am indeed rambling and if this post needs to be deleted. I just think sometimes research is focused on the wrong thing. I get the need for awareness....but we are Aware. Trust me, I get the need for treatment and couldn't be more thankful for the latest treatments that allows sisters to survive years past what was possible a year Go. But more than that, understanding the biology behind the mechanisms behind it alli feel will eventually lead us to not only a prevention, but also a cure.
I'll get off my soapbox now, and I thank you for allowing me to get this off my chest. It's time for a true change. Enough with the talk. Enough with the walk. About time for results.
