Accelerated Death Benefits

Options

Has anyone out there filed a claim for Accelerated Death benefits from a Employers based life insurance policy and been successful? I have been forced out of my job by my employer stating that I needed to go out on disability until I get well.  I have Stage 4 Breast Cancer with extenstive mets from my skull, to my ribs, spine and pelvis area. How much better do they really think I am going to get?  My husband has been unemployed now for almost a year after the company that he worked for closed and filed a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy.  Disability pays only 60% of my income.  The life term policy that the company provides for  all employees has a clause for filing to be paid 75% of the face value of the policy.  The basis for payment would be for you to be terminally ill.  The doctor would have to say that you have 12  months or less to live.  I need the money to pay for expenses that are not covered by the health policy as well as to pay the cost of the cobra which is very costly.  ($900.00 per month) If anyone has any knowledge as to how to make this happen please share with me.

Dunnmd, I think the best thing to do is contact whomever handles HR for your employer and ask that person.

I did. I printed the forms and filled them in the best I could and took them to the oncologist. He said, "but we are hoping and trying to keep you alive longer" and I said "can you guarantee that and can I have it in writing?". He signed and I had the check about 2 weeks later.

They paid 75%, and held 25% as in effect without premiums which will be paid to DH when the time comes.

    Key wording: terminal.
