Is it OK to take kelp supplements during rads, or will the iodine somehow block the effect of the radiation?

I was told not to take any supplements except a multi-vitamin unless approved by the RO.

Check with the RO or radiation nurse.  I was suprised to find that vitamin C was a problem  outside of the amount in a multi-vitamin.   I got a nutrition handout when I went in for the simulation, along with both breast and general radiation information sheets.

    Good luck,

    Meg

Thanks, just thought I would see if anyone here knew, because my docs seem a bit ignorant about supplements.

Good question. Iodine is supposed to protect the thyroid gland if one is accidentally exposed to radiation but I don't know if affects anything else.

yes, Cycle, that is why I ask. It seems like a good idea to protect the thyroid and purge excess zapping, but not sure if iodine might make you "impervious" to the radiation.

Update:  I talked to some friends who work in the pharma industry and have experience wiht radiation. They told me that iodine would only protect you in a situation where there is actual radioactive spills, like a nuclear plant melting down, for example. It would likely have no effect, negative or positive, in the case of getting radiation treatment.
