3rd tumor found in a month

Options

I had my yearly mamogram on 11/30/11 and calcification was found.  On Dec. 12th I had my biopsy.  I was told I have breast cancer the day after my 53rd birthday.  On December 23 I had a lumpectomy.  During the mamogram before the surgery another area of calcification was found.  The surgeon removed that as well as the first.  The 2nd. tumor was cancer also.  Last night the surgeon called me and told me that a 3rd tumor was found at the edge of what they took out and he wants me to come back in for another lumpectomy.  I also have to say that my mom had cancer at the exact same age as I in the same breast in the same vacinity.  My aunt & great aunt also had breast cancer.  My younger sister died of a different kind of cancer almost 2 years ago at 47.  I'm thinking that maybe a single or double mastectomy would be a better choice for me right now.  Any thoughts?  Have any of you encountered this at all?

Lisa, I'm so sorry about your sister, and about the situation you find yourself in now.  A few questions...  Did you have an MRI prior to your surgery?  And has anyone suggested genetic testing to you?  And did they check your Sentinel Node, or has anyone mentioned possibly needing chemo to you?  All of these things could factor into what to do going forward.  Also, have you considered getting a second opinion?   I'm not necessarily advocating changing breast surgeons, but not all doctors have the same recommendations about what to do, and sometimes just talking to a 2nd or even a 3rd breast surgeon can add really helpful information to our decision-making process.  Also, if you decide you want to have an mx or a bmx, there's the whole topic of reconstruction options to think about. (((Hugs))) and glad you've found BCO ~   Deanna

PS ~ If you read my bio page (click on my avatar to find it), you'll see that I started out with a lumpectomy, but ended up with a mx due to additional lesions found.

It is difficult to answer because you have not listed your type, size, stage, or grade of cancer.  A second opinion would be a good idea to help you consider the options.  dlb823 has made some good suggestions already, including the BRCA testing.
