Breast Cancer Vaccine
Have you heard of the breast cancer vaccine? This vaccine was able to prevent 100% of mice from getting breast cancer. And these mice were bred to develop this disease --- usually 95% of these mice would get breast cancer. In fact, all the mice in the control group did get this cancer. This vaccine was created by Dr. Tuohy and his team at the Cleveland Clinic. It uses a specific protein seen in breast cancer but not in healthy tissue.
Unfortunately, there isn't ANY funding coming in to help start human trials on this vaccine! Isn't that horrible? We really need to do something about this. If this vaccine is tested on humans and everything goes well, we could eliminate practically all of breast cancer in only ten years. Shouldn't we be fighting for this? Isn't it time to make a change in the breast cancer community? Please try to find out more about this and share with family and friends. And you can always send in a donation to Dr. Tuohy himself!

Do you have links to more info you could share with us? I don't know much about BC vaccines so I did a google search. I may not have the complete picture but this is what I found.
This article from May 2010 mentions Dr. Touhy's work and at the end of the article it said he got backing from the NIH and that otherBC vaccine trials are underway.
This more recent article highlights a DCIS trial. (there's a link in the article with specific info on a trial at Penn Medicine)

Maybe the vaccines are progressing ???? (though the trials can be a slow process) Or maybe you're referring to something else? (Dr. T needs more funding for a later trial stage?)

Hi Peggy, I looked at the article you sent. As you can see that article is dated May 2010. The NIH may have given him a grant to do his initial research on a breast cancer vaccine with mice, but there has been no substantial funding or grants since then. There are definitely no human trials going on yet for this vaccine. We need to change this! It seems like that vaccine is just sitting in the lab going nowhere. I'm so sure that there are plenty of women that would be willing to be in these trials especially if this vaccine has a real chance of stopping breast cancer once and for all!
The best link I can give you to show this is a link that has an online registry of women ready to take part in these trials : http://www.thepinksquadron.org/
This website also describes the Human Mammary Tumor Virus -- a virus that has been found in around 40% of breast cancers. The scientists (Dr. Pogo and others) are getting closer and closer to finding out whether breast cancer can be caused by this virus. This virus was first seen in mice and there is probably even more info on the Mouse Mammary Tumor Virus and how it causes breast cancer. Interesting fact: this mouse virus is incredibly similar to the human one! It's could even be passed from mouse to human as the statistics show that breast cancers are more prevalent in places with a large mouse population. There isn't yet evidence beyond a shadow of a doubt that this virus can cause breast cancer, but the evidence is definitely leaning toward this possibility.
Clearly vaccines could potentially stop the spread of breast cancer. We must raise awareness of this and try to get these studies funded. This could save so many lives and reduce fear of recurrence. Please help us get the word out!
Here is a youtube video of a woman that has actually perished from this horrible disease but spent the rest of her days to push toward funding this vaccine:

I am curious. Are you a breast cance survivor or a friend or family member? It is easier to chat with someone when you know something about them. For all I know you could work for this doctor. (Just kidding.)

We've had 'fundraising drives' pushed on the board for Dr. Touhy several times before. I believe he even posted here himself at one point. He is at the Cleveland Clinic which has to know all the ins and outs of getting funding and grants. It puzzles me that they don't seem to be backing his research.
There are many vaccines in trials. I don't know that personally I would direct my money toward a vaccine for a mouse virus that somebody just thinks 'might' cause breast cancer. If that is what it is? The presence of something does not necessarily mean it is a cause of anything. Perhaps he needs more research and evidence to support his theory and cannot yet document enough potential to justify his requests for funding from the usual sources?
rosemary ... your question is not as far-fetched as you might think. Dr. Touhy and his staff are well aware of this board and have been here attempting to raise funds before. That is also the only subject Eliza has posted about. So ...

Hi Peggy, I participated in the breast cancer vaccine trial at Penn. Like the woman in the video I had very few side effects and a complete pathologic response (means that the vaccine helped my body eat up all the cancer cells so that when I had surgery, none were left). There are about 34 or so BC vaccines now in clinical trials. Check out my website www.shelleydodt.com or penniesinaction.org for more info. Mine was for DCIS/Her2/neu. BCTrials.org has a whole section on vaccines and can help you navigate the info on trials. They are the way of the future.

I GOT a vaccine for Her2/neu + at the University of Pennsylvania. Check out my website www.shelleydodt.com or penniesinaction.org for more info. There are a lot of vaccines for Her2+ now in clinical trials and they have had great results.

If this vaccine is out there for clinical trials then why hasnt anyone heard about it to try? I know many of us would jump at a vaccine to cure us so simply..
-
Just wondering why the opening topic comment was "removed by the community" ??
-
I have heard about the Her+ vaccine studies from my onc. We are going to enroll me in one when I finish Herceptin. I don't know if this particular post is valid, but I don't love the whole "removal of post" thing. It's confusing.
