Cooking Up a Revolution

    This year more than 40,000 women will die of breast cancer in the United States, a half-million worldwide. These women will all suffer through the final throes of the disease, a tortured demise characterized by widespread dissemination of tumor throughout the body. This is what is known as Stage IV breast cancer. The cancer cells have migrated to lungs, liver, brain, bone and other tissues. These women will be given additional radiation, more toxic drugs, and palliation – but for Stage IV breast cancer survivors there is no more hope for a cure today than there was thirty years ago. The great strides in improved survival have been made for women with early-stage disease: those that recur and become Stage IV patients have the same dismal prognosis as was the case before any of the breast cancer foundations were formed, before the War on Cancer was declared, or before any of the recent advances that have saved so many.

   Last year Professor Vincent Tuohy of the Cleveland Clinic announced that he had developed the world’s first preventive breast cancer vaccine capable of preventing breast cancer in 100% of inoculated mice. This is an extraordinary discovery with extraordinary results. Tuohy’s vaccine is also capable of slowing the growth of tumors that have already formed, making it quite interesting for the half-million women dying of breast cancer this year and that half-million plus who will take there deathbed places next year.

    Tuohy’s vaccine is ready for safety testing in women but no one is willing to fund it. If the large breast cancer foundations that control the marketing agenda, and the government agencies that allocate tax dollars for breast cancer research, will not break free of the shackles imposed by the check-writing pharmaceutical and diagnostic industry, then perhaps the Stage IV breast cancer survivors, who are just about out of time and for which there is no substantive hope for cure, might organize a revolution in support of Tuohy’s vaccine.
