Menstruation while on Tamoxifen, post Zoladex

Hello all,

I have steered clear of BCA related message boards etc. for a long time, but there has been a "change" in my body that is propelling me to seek advice.

A little history...
I was diagnosed nearly seven years ago at a rather late stage (IIIC) but I am proud to say that after a radical mastectomy, dose-dense ACT, 6 weeks of radiation therapy, a TRAM flap procedure, 5 years of Zoladex and 6 + years of Tamoxifen (still going) I am still cancer-free. Oh yeah, I was 28 years old.

I started Zoladex injections around the same time I started chemo. I started Tamoxifen about 6 weeks after I finished chemo. I stopped menstruating after my first Zoladex treatment and I have not had my period for 6.5 years.... until today!?

I woke up in the middle of the night with intense cramps (I used to get them really bad) and I honestly did not know what was happening... it had been so long since I had menstrual cramps that I forgot what they felt like - I thought I was having gas pain! Anyway, after a couple of hours of sleeplessness, I got up and went to the washroom to discover that my period had returned. (And no, I wasn't prepared; haven't had to buy any of the period paraphanalia for a long time!)

About 6 months after I stopped taking Zoladex (2.5 years ago), my oncologist asked me if my menstrual cycle had recommenced. I asked, "should it?" because it hadn't. He said that some people get it back, and others don't. I asked if I should be concerned if it came back, to which he replied, "No".

Anyway, I just find it incredibly bizarre because it has been 2.5 years since I stopped Zoladex. I am still on Tamoxifen and will be indefinitely. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced such a delay in getting their period back?

Sorry if this has been a little long to read.

I look forward to hearing from you!
