Red Meat and Bison

Hey ladies (and any guys who may be here)

So I have accepted the fact that my normal Meat and Potatoes diet is probably not helping with my MBC.  I have read some posts and studies about how a diet can play a big role in recurrance espically with TN BC.

Anyways, I was looking at the diets, and they all say to avoid Red Meat and Pork products.  I understand that this is  due to the hormone fed animals.  I have read numerous studies, and they all point to the added hormones in the meat.

What about Bison?  It is extremely low-fat, not hormone fed, usually wild (at least here in MT) and tastes like beef.  I have found that some studies list wild game is ok to eat (elk, deer,  fowl, etc)

 Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks,

Eric

    Hi Eric,

I've read Dr. Block's book "Life Over Cancer," and his suggestion for any red meat is to stick with grass-fed if at all possible, as it has a healthier balance of Omega-3s. I believe Dr. Servan-Schreiber ("Anticancer") says the same thing. Unfortunately, I think there are supposed to be other issues with red meat beyond just the antibiotics that they feel is a problem, so monthly at the most is still the recommendation. I do think the low-fat nature of bison makes it a better choice, and it is yummy! I will check out my books and see what they say, and get back to you on that.

I am a big proponent of a low-fat, low simple carb diet for us TNs, and think you are on the right track with changing things up. It can only help, right? I've really fallen off the tracks since my Stage IV diagnosis, but I am slowly getting back into the groove, I always feel so much better when I'm eating healthier.

    Suze,

Thanks for that.  It is about the same thing that I have been finding.  I have never been a healthy eater, and usually eat beef about 5 times a week, so this is a BIG change for me.

Please let me know what your books say.

Do you have any good diet sites/books to recomend?  A friend has showed me the Paleo diet.  She does not have cancer, but noted that a lot of the recipies would be applicable.

Sorry to hear about your Stage IV diag, but I am right there with you.

    Thanks,

    Eric

At the Cancer Center we recommend to radiation patients to have red meat, because it will help tissues heal .
