soy and ER + BC
I'm confused about the soy products and ER+ BC. I've read articles that studies suggest that soy products may be harmful to ER+BC. I was thinking of going vegetarian (my daughters are) and was thinking of following the macrobiotic diet. one of my survivor buddies was ER+ this is her 23 yr out. and she followed the macrobiotic diet when she was on chemo. I was t hinking of it more for a diet when I'm off chemo, don't want to go changing things too much right now.
I started chemo last wed. IDK maybe I'm getting lucky cause I had such a horrible surgery. but I feel fine. been drinking lots of water. have my usual anxiety, can't sleep. but knock on wood. I feel fine. weird
just wondering what everyoneelse thought of soy

Yet Asian women have been fine on soy. Go figure.

Fran, what I was told @ UCLA, and what I believe the most recent research supports, is that natural soy products like tofu, edaname and soy milk, are absolutely fine for us -- actually good for us -- in moderation. And that's assuming you like soy and have always eaten it. What is not good for us is soy protein isolate, which is soy protein powder -- the kind you mix in protein drinks. It's also frequently the protein used in protein or energy bars and some other packaged foods and drinks. That form is bad for us because it's concentrated and no longer in its natural form.
OTOH, some natural-thinking women avoid soy because much of the soy crop in the US is GMO and/or contaminated with herbicides and pesticides. Products like soybean oil and soy lecithin, which are by-products of soy, can be contaminated, or so I've read here. So looking for organic soy products might be best if you want to eat some soy.
It seems like there are some oncs who still caution against soy, but I honestly feel that's probably old information and not based on any current research. Deanna
