Liver Function

Options

Hi all, a month ago I had a mild throat infection, and was feeling unwell. I thought of doing a general check for my blood including liver functions. My AST - ALT are 37 and 40. I was told this is mild elevation. I called my Dr. who said this is normal range, and despite the fact that it is boarder line, yet it could be influenced by the infection I had when I did the test. I consulted two other Drs and they confirmed that those levels are normal.

What worries me, is that when I reviewed my LFT all my AST-ALT were in the range of 7-18 it neveer shoot that high. Although it is in the range, but I am overly concerned as to why it went-up.

Ever since that time I started worrying, my Dr. had a clinical examination and he said the liver is OK and not enlarged. It is worth mentioning that all other tests I had are within a very normal range.

I am not complaining and have no symptoms, sometimes I might feel a very mild stabbing pain under my rib cage and it goes, no fever nothing else that could bother. But I think my appetite is a bit low than before, Thank GOD I don't have nuasea or sickness, but I really don't feel much into food. I try to drink more juice which I prefer.

Any one who could share their thoughts

Well, I had* liver mets. My liver function has always been in the normal range and my appetite was good.  It was found incidentially on an abdominal scan looking for the source of back pain (unrelated to the liver).

Liver function numbers can vary widely and your infection and illness can certainly have caused the fluctation.  My mother died of cirrhosis and her numbers were normal until the very end.

Liver is a hard one to diagnose since most people are asymptomatic until it gets really bad.  As a stage IIIc, which kind of routine scans are you getting?  If you are really worried, you can ask your doctor for an abdominal CT and see what he says.

*I say had because I just had a resection and had them cut out.
