I thought I had read somewhere that an MRI was an effective tool for diagnosing DCIS. I had an MRI last week and they told me that no additional information on a "suspicious" are was provided by the MRI. Does anybody know?

    Hi, Soccermom,

I think many times surgeons will order an MRI to see the true extent of the DCIS, to see if there are any other areas of concern, and to evaluate the opposite breast before planning surgery. Are you still waiting for surgery? When I had my pre-op MRI, the surgeon told me that my DCIS was "not extensive," meaning he expected to be able to get clean margins with a partial mastectomy. If it had been "extensive" I would have needed a mastectomy.

    Wishing you the best!

Thanks lane4. There are some other suspicious areas and maybe you are right that they wanted to look at the other breast. Turns out they found a 1 cm "something" that will need to be biopsied. Now that I'm facing 2 biopsies (one on each breast) and possibly more in the future, I made the decision to do a BMX. Just coming to terms with it and made up my mind on Friday.
