ALLODERM , immediate reconstruction for PBS
Hi everyone... My results after my lumpectomy showed mutifocal LCIS ... I have been monitoring for over 2 years now and now my breast surgeon is concerned... I see my PS on October 4th to discuss PBS with alloderm... Just wondering if anyone has had it and what was it like ... All I ever heard was mastectomy with tissue expanders ... I am really SCARED about having to do this but I want to live and cannot take the worrying ..... Please shed some positive news for me... Thanks chris 38...

Hi Chris. I'm not sure what PBS stands for? I think you're talking about a preventative or prophylactic bilateral mastectomy? If so, I did this same surgery earlier this year. My PS did use alloderm during the mastectomy/tissue expander surgery. It worked well for me with no problems thus far. I assume you've had some changes that have been detected during the monitoring? Please feel free to ask anything.

Alloderm can and often is used with tissue expanders. It forms a sling-like area for the expanders and later on the implants.

Chris: I had a BLM with immediate recon on May 27. In a 7 hour surgery, the BS removed my breast tissue, the PS put in saline implants with Alloderm to create a pocket/sling. It was truly a one-step process for me. I have had no further surgeries or procedures. I do not need any further treatment (such as radiation or Tamoxifen). I have no nipples so I may get some tattooed on at a later date, but that's it. I'm done. I am 4mos post -op and had no complications, no infections, the recon results are good. It seems like it is pretty rare for things to go as smoothly as they did for me, but it is possible. I did have a lot of chest pain for about 6 weeks after surgery, since my pectoral muscles did not have time to gradually stretch out like they would have with expanders. Also the skin was super tight, I am amazed I do not have stretch marks. It is a rough surgery to go thru, no doubt about it, but it is do-able. The peace of mind I have knowing my recurrence rate is as close to 0% as possible is huge.
It's a lot to think about and it is very scary. It's a very personal decision. Sending you positive thoughts that you will figure out what will be best for you. Hugs !!
