Atypical Lobular Hyperplasia

Options

I have a history of breast cancer (ductal) treated with partial mastectomy, radiation (not completed due to  continual seromas) 4years ago. I found a lump in the same breast, that did not show up on mammo or ultrasound but everyone could feel it. Did a biopsy/lumpectomy and the result was atypical lobular hyperplasia.

Surgeon said to be very happy it's not cancer, (I am) but I am still very leery as my cancer was ductal this is lobular and my mom had mastectomy from lobular breast cancer. In nursing school we learned that hyperplasia was overgrowth of normal cells, atypical meant just that.

I have considered bi-lateral prophylactic mastectomies with TRAM, any thoughts, suggestions?

Msnurse, I had frequent new lumps in my remaining breast after mastectomy for ILC in the other breast, all of which turned out to be ALH. After three years (and several surgical biopsies because they could be felt but not imaged) I had a second, prophylactic mastectomy. Among the findings in the path report was an unsuspected area of LCIS (lobular is sneaky stuff!) So I was doubly glad for the decision to remove that breast as well. So was my oncologist.Laughing

I didn't do any reconstruction and am also very happy with that decision. As long as you're researching all your options, you might want to look over the BreastFree.org site as well, to get an idea of how women feel about going without recon:

All best wishes for a decision you're at peace with!
