Does anyone have any plans/ideas to raise awareness in October?
October is Breast Cancer awareness month. Are you planning something to spread the word?

While I appreciate the sentiment, I'm tired of money going to awarenss. It should be Breast Cancer Cure month. People think that if it's found then we are cured. If we are lucky, the bc doesn't come back and if not, it does. There is no in between and many people think it's totally curable and all we need is awareness. Frankly, with all due respect, I know you mean well but unless money is going towards a cure, it's all a waste of time. It was good 20 years ago but we are now beyond awareness.

Maybe I'll sit in my front yard with my shirt off...

I like that Cyborg, maybe I'll run all my errands without my prosthesis and a tight pink tank top.

I actually am doing something that I'm quite excited about. My project is called the 31 day project. I'm going to do most of the "recruiting" via facebook like the stupid, supposed "awareness" games, only my "game" isn't a game at all - it's a fundraiser for two of my favorite non-profit organizations. The Pink Daisy Project and MetaVivor Research and Support, Inc. My mission - if you choose to accept it is to raise 41,000 in 31 days. 1 dollar for every life lost each year to MBC. Half of the money will go to PDP to support young women in treatment and the other half will go towards a research grant via MetaVivor. The campaign is going to launch one week before Pinktober...be watching for it - hopefully it will make it's way to everyone!

I was just going to respond to this thread with the 31 day project info!
I'm really excited about it too- I hate the pink washing of October and DESPISE the stupid FB games that are played in the name of "awareness" and the 2 cents that goes to random breast charities all to make a buck on every product from cat litter to cars in October.
31 day project is awesome! It is all about awareness and action about YOUNG women with breast cancer and women with METS. I think it is a great idea. Love it, and Pink Daisy is my all time favorite charity ever so I love this! -
Mustang, can you post a link to the 31 day project? Maybe repeat it on other boards here?
-
Luckily Oct also means Halloween!! I focus on that instead, or at least try to!!
Seems to me like the 31 days thing has kind of launched? Or maybe not officially. The link to the page is here "31 Days Project"

I will contact the moderators and see if I'm able to do that. Yes, it has kicked off, but the rules here state you have to have permission to ask for any type of donations.
-
I think it's awesome you're paying attention to the rules lol.
Maybe since you're asking people to post on Fb it's not quite asking for money? Either way I think that this project is amazing. Are you getting any press or anything? I'm out of the loop since I'm not on the FB group anymore. -
I am trying to exercise enough to walk the Komen 5K Oct. 23rd near me. Otherwise I am actually going to be speaking at a group someone is getting together (nothing big) trying to get "awareness" out there for young women to do breast self exams.
@Cyborg-totally hilarious!
Mustang-I'm so excited that the ball is ROLLING!

Pam pitched an article to some online magazine and they bought it - don't when it will hit, but it is a women's e-zine, so that should be good. I sent some emails out to a local TV Station and to Robin Roberts at Good Morning America - so far, no bites, but as it grows, who knows! Up to almost 2200 when I woke up this morning...feeling very excited about this!
-
Cyborg I like your idea. More money needs to go towards a cure, everyone has to be aware that breast cancer excists. I was and still got it.
-
Hah, okay I have another one. Not quite October, but Sept 27th I am going to be in fashion show with BC survivors as models with my drains still in from my next surgery.
BC isn't cute honey.

Yes sweetie, I do have plans for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I ALWAYS put it in my church Bulletin and remind to do self exams AND to get regular mammograms, also remind my sisters, cousins to make sure because they are more prone to get it because of me. I also crocet hats and some scarfs but always hats for patients going through, I also write a leaflet for the cancer suites where I received my treatment and I also give free copies of my book, "The Healings Of Breast Cancer," A Physical And Spiritual Healing Of My Body And Soul to the Library in my community. God Bless Us ALL. a 17 yr cancer Survivor(Praise the LORD)). msphil (idc, stage 2,3 nodes involved, chemo(Lmast) then radiation and tomoxifen for 5 yrs and in between all of that I got married, for I was planning my wedding when diagnosed (I found the lump)
-
I am doing an interview for a local radio station
I hope I won't be too nervous! I'd like to share the importance of clinical breast exams from a physician or qualified health professional and self breast exams. Specifically for young women under 40, because the screening program in Ontario is pretty much non-existing!
-
I'm going to look for the 31day project - finally, something that addresses the REAL DEAL, not some pinkwashed bullshit-corporate shilling.
i'm also going to shut down any pinkwashing crap/sentiments that come my way.
-
if i "sound" pissed off, it's because i am. in my perspective, these campaigns try to make a silk purse out of the sow's ear that is cancer. i really don't give a shit about pink ribbons on my cookie packages, water bottles, leg warmers, etc. i just give a shit about seeing my 10 year old boy graduate from college, tour Europe with my hubby in retirement, and watch my 13 year old daughter get married.
THAT is what is important to me. you can keep the pinkwashing. ("you" is generally used, not directed at any poster here)
-
Elmcity - I totally understand where you are coming from!
The way I see it is that the more people realize that breast cancer is so common, and if they know someone affected by it, the better chances there are for people to want to prevent it. All the pink ribbon stuff seems pretty cheesy, but it generates conversations. I like to share what I've learned. So if someone comments on my pink ribbon stuff, I tell them I had cancer and share my story.
Take Care

Naked from waist up should raise some awareness.
-
i would if i had the guts!
do u?
-
For someone like me, who ignored a lump for 2 months before actually seeing a doctor, naked from waist up sounds to be the most effective. It will hit you right away.

Here is a link to the article our friend wrote about The 31 Day Project (see MustangIA's) previous post!
