It's been over 1 year and 3 months since I thought CPP was financially based, so I didn't apply cuz I get disability $ from work.  Well as it turns out, it's medically based and my pay advisor at work is shocked that I haven't applied yet.  Ooops!.

So make sure you apply if you;ve contributed to CPP for a few years...

Now I'm curious. CPP disability benefits? Could that possibly apply to me? I am 65, coming up for 5 yrs since MX etc. Self-employed. I started collecting my CPP at age 60. You mean anyone who gets cancer can apply for CPP disabliity benefits? I'm definitely out of the loop!

    could someone please explain?

As for the initial post, I really don't know what she means. No, just because you have cancer, you don't get CPP disability benefits. If you are getting 100% of your LTD benefits, you are not entitled to CPP disability. If LTD stops (termination, retirement), then CPP will take over. If your LTD benefits are reduced (length of time varies between employers), CPP will make up the difference. All of this is based on your Dr.'s verification that you are unable to work.

The OP kind of makes it sound like you get a windfall if you have cancer, by getting full benefits on both. That's not the case.
