For all of you West Side Story film buffs and history fans....The location where that famous opening scene was filmed was where Lincoln Center now is located.  Robert Moses, New York's Master Builder, gave the film production company permission to use the area because he was tearing down the housing to create Lincoln Center....Here's what George Chakiris had to say last year on the 50th anniversary of the film (above is the link to the entire article):

 "George Chakiris, who played Bernardo, leader of the Puerto Rican gang, the
Sharks, in the film, said in a phone interview last week that its prologue was
shot at two Manhattan locations, at 68^th Street and Amsterdam Avenue,
slightly north of where Avery Fisher Hall, home of the New York Philharmonic,
stands today, and in a schoolyard at 110^th Street and Second Avenue. 
The buildings on Amsterdam Avenue "were all vacated, they were not occupied by
anyone.  They remained standing until we finished working there.  My
understanding is that once we were actually finished and had come back to Los
Angeles to go into the studio, that's when all that started to get torn down"
for Lincoln Center, he said."
