Confused by results

I am a 55 year old woman, who found a lump (marble size) next to my left nipple without redness.  My doctor scheduled an ultrasound and mammogram.  Two days later, my breast started to turn red near the lump.  Went back to doctor and she said the breast was inflamed and gave my antibotics.  My appointment was moved and the mammo and ultrasound were performed.  The results stated that I had 1.9 X 1.8 cm lobulated irregular, hypoechoic mass with posterior shadowing with some skin thicking and slightly thickened lymph nodes. Assessment: birads 3.  I went to the surgeron on Monday, and he said he wanted to "lance" the mass.  When he lanced the inflamed mass it did not have any pus.  He then took a tissue and skin biopsy.

In the meantime, the doctor switched my antibotic and I started to see improvment in the swelling.  The inflamation improved about 50%.

I am going tomorrow for the results, but want to know what questions or further testing should I request?

    edteach1,

Good idea for the biopsy.  Let us know how your results turned out.  It looks as if they are testing everything on you.  Good Luck with the results.

I'm concerned that your doctor did not mention the possibility of Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC) to you. You have several of the symptoms. For your own sake, print out the signs and symptoms of IBC on the Inflammatory Breast Cancer Foundation website, www.eraseibc.com. I only had one symptom...so don't let any doctor tell you that you don't have enough symptoms to have IBC.  If you aren't pregnant, aren't nursing and aren't running a fever, you don't have an infection and don't have mastitis. You should have them rule out IBC since it is highly aggressive. It's also treated differently than "regular" breast cancer. Surgery DOES NOT come first...chemo comes first. Please let us know what you find out.

Hopefuly it was an infection process.

Inflammatory usually does not have a lump.

    What were the results?
