Can a MRI detect cancer in the lymphnodes?

I have DCIS, and am scheduled for a bilateral mastectomy on the 12th of Aug. They are also going to biopsy my lymphnodes. My underarms arms are sore and sort of itchy. I am extremely concerned about this. I would like to have an MRI, before surgery so that I know. I do realize that the MRI may not pick it up if it is too small, but I'm just wondering if it is possible in most cases.

MRI missed my two positive nodes just prior to BMX.

An MRI showed my sister had one positive lymph node. She actually had 16 positive nodes.

my doc said only sentinal lymph node study can determine for sure.  I'm not the most educated person in the world, but I didn't know that DCIS would have spread to lymph nodes since it's not invasive.  I did have IDC and my underarms were both painful prior to my BLMX and I was sure that it was spread throughout my lymph nodes.  But both SNB's came back clear.  Not sure if it was a new purse I was carrying, or my imagination.  Since surgery, no more pain in my underarms.  I'm thinking about you and wishing you the best.

My MRI showed 2 rounded lymph nodes. But this was not enough to call them positive. They did turn out to be positive. Pathology is needed & will be done when your SNs are removed. I think a MRI wouldn't really give you additional/helpful/reassuring info. Just add to the cost & your inconvenience.
