Ontario Oncs and ILC
Hi all,
I've delayed posting here until I have my final path report post Ux (I'm two weeks post-surgery today); however, with both surgeon and GP on vacation it looks like I won't know my complete status until next week when I see the surgeon.
My core biopsy results, tumor characteristics and demographic (60, HRT) make me quite certain that the Dx will be ILC. I just don't know the type, grade, stage etc.
I've immersed myself in research and I have a few questions that perhaps someone here could help me with.
Is there an Onc in Southern Ontario who is particularly conversant with ILC? My oncological referral will be to the Juravinski in Hamilton but I'm within a reasonable distance from both London and Kitchener. Toronto is less convenient, but I would certainly consider it in seeking a second opinion.
What's the usual wait time between referral and the oncologist's appointment?
Did anyone here seek a second opinion on pathology &/or treatment plan? And, if so, how was that request received?
I've also decided that if the diagnosis is as I suspect I will be requesting a PMx for the other breast ASAP. I guess the timing of that will depend upon any medical or radiological treatment required.
Sorry for deluging you with questions but I have SO many questions and BCO is such a fantastic source of information. I don't know what I'd do without it.
TIA

Hi Tia,
I don't really have any answers to your questions but didn't want your post to go unanswered.
I first saw the breast surgeon and went through my surgery before seeing the oncologist. There was no "wait time" to see the oncologist, while I was recovering from the surgery I got a phone call from the oncologist office telling me to come in next week. I guess once you're "in the system", referrals happen behind the scenes and its transparent to patients. Same was the case with my radiation oncologist.
I also opted for prophylactic mastectomy and that was done at the same as my surgery. Wait time for that was 4-6 weeks, but it was Christmas season, so atypical from what I was told.
I am in London area and I'm very happy with the clinic there, but I really don't know if anyone here specializes in ILC. Also, not sure how one would go about seeking a second opinion. It was my understanding that a panel of doctors suggested treatment plan for me and my oncologist presented it... As you can see, I am not much help but I do wish you all the best and looking forward to reading more from you.
