MRI Before Starting Radiation?

Options

Hi everybody

I am new to this site and have been looking around the forums.

I just finished chemo and had my first meeting with my radiologist. He said that because of where my tumor was and the fact that the surgeon had to go back in after initial lumpectomy to increase the margins, before he maps out my radiation path, he wants me to have an MRI to make sure everything is all clear.

I thought that I was gonna pass out . . . Got very lightheaded . . . The fact that it may not be all clear was not even in my radar!

Is there anyone else out there who has also had this experience or can offer some words of encouragement? I go tomorrow.

Thanks so much!

Sue

I haven't had this experience, since my surgeon (for my re-excision) and my radiation oncologist are part of a team who work together at a comprehensive cancer center, but I did have an MRI before my re-excision because the team wasn't certain that my original excision site was my primary tumor.  Try not to let this upset you--just see it as potential reaffirmation that the surgeon got good margins and that that was your primary tumor.  Best wishes.

ETA: you do not say where your tumor was.  Mine was high in my armpit, so because of its relatively unusual location, I had lots of tests--another mammogram, an MRI, CT scan, bone scan.
