Does anyone have experience with X Clair?

Hi everyone,

I met with my RO for the first time this week  I really like her.  When I asked her about skin care during rads, she felt very strongly that I should use nothing until I start having problems.  She then mentioned X Clair, which I could use from the start.  She said it is very expensive, but my insurance may cover it.  She also said she is not sure it really helps.  She did give me a couple of samples to try before rads to make sure I'm not allergic, and a prescription in case I want to use it.  I'm having trouble making up my mind whether to do things her way or to use the X Clair.  She said if I decide to use it, we could see how it does for me.  I get the impression most of her patients don't use it.

Have any of you used it, and if so, what did you think of it?

I just got some yesterday and will post as time goes on. My insurance did not cover it and it was $67 but it looks like enough for the next 5 weeks.

I felt like if I was buying it for my mom or my daughter I would not blink an eye, so I thought  " that is what i should do for myself as well".

What I like about it is you can put it on any time an they can radiate through it,thus leaving the skin protected even then. I was told all other creams and lotions and potions have to wait until after treatment each day.

I used it.  My RO said to start using aloe (pure, no dyes, chemicals etc) from the start and go from there.  As soon as I started to get pink his nurse suggested xclaire.  I used it after each session.  My skin held up really well.  Don't know if it was the xclaire or just luck.  My only real skin problem was from the stickers they put on....i developed an allergy to the glue.  We didn't know this until I was REALLY developing sores under them.  I was numb (thankfully) so I didn't know either.  So, I would check under the stickers every few days!

I used emu oil and did not burn at all despite being fair.

Thanks for your input.  I still haven't made a decision, but I'm leaning toward using the x clair.  I have tried the sample and didn't have any bad reactions to it.  Now I need to find out if my insurance will cover it.  I'm just afraid of getting some really bad burns and want to avoid it if I can.

Merilee, keep posting to let us know how it is working, and I will do the same.

Even if your insurance does not cover it you are worth the $68 and right now is the time to pamper yourself with the best of care. I think the tube will last the entire 30 treatments so a little over $2 a day to make sure things go well is money well spent.

Imagine it was your daughter or mom, you would buy it for them.

It will be great if a tube lasts that long.   I will need to cover the area under my arm, my breast, and from the collar bone down. ( not sure of all the correct medical terms).  You're right, I'm worth it.  My RO doesn't seem to have a great deal of faith in it, but I want to try it.

I have finished 10 rads so far and am using the Xclair. So far so good.

I'm still waiting to hear for my RO to find out when I start rad.  Very frustrating.

Jules I just saw this - x-clair is a nut oil so if you aren't allergic to nuts it is an awesome cream... it has a little pain/itch reliever in it and when you put it on pink skin you get an "ahhhhhhhh" effect...It feels so good - I am a month out or rads and squeezing the last little bit out of the tube... I really like it!!

Hi Jules,

My radiation facility stocked tubes of XClair in the changing rooms and recommended I use it starting on day 1.  They gave me a tube for use at home.  I have sensitive, tender skin but my radiated area had only redness and one tiny bad spot. You'll do great with it.

Pat,  thanks for the encouragment.  I have turned in my prescription and will pick it up soon.  I still haven't started radiation yet, the whole process has been very slow for me.  How wonderful that your facility provided the X clair for you, and that it worked so well!

Well, I finally had my first rad treatment yesterday.  What a wild ride...but that's a story for another day.

The techs marked all over me with magic markers.  It looks like a couple of  5 year olds were using me for a coloring book. 2 different colors.  They then told me to be careful not to scrub it off when I showered.  Ummm....okay.

So I come home and start to apply the X clair, and I notice real quick that is is smearing the marks...oh hell!  I take a kleenex and gently daub off as much of the Xclair and smeared ink as possible. Wonder what my RO will say about this?  I sure hate to be told I can't use it now.

Just a short update.  Today I had treatment #22 and was examined by my RO.  She said I was making a believer out of her.  I have absolutely no visable effects to my skin so far.  I have been using the Xclair religiously 3 times a day.
