I was going about my merry life, working hard, being a wife and a mother to a 4 yr old & a 18 mth old.  When four little words shook me to my core and would change me and my life as I knew it.

Here I am a year later, chemo, rads, and surgeries behind me...I now live in another state, in a brand new house & starting work again, so much has changed.  My hair is trying to come back, my chest looks like a skinny teenage boy, my joints hurt, and I have some (self-dx) PTSD.  But I'm here (((thank you Lord Jesus!))) and I've seen each of my girls have another b-day, saw my brother get married, I'm slowly decorating that house, I'll see my oldest start kindergarten in a few weeks and I've celebrated many other occassions & holidays that I never thought I'd see. I still love drinking beer, eating carbs and sweets, and I love ya'll for being here with me through this whole screwed up event.  I was hoping this would help those newbies out there at the beginning see things do get better and life goes on.  No, I'm not in the +5 years out forum yet but I'm working on it.

Jenny, Congrats! I agree with Kerry, the first year is the toughest! And I had some PTSD which just get better with time, I promise! I now only think of BC a few times a day (it used to be that not 5 minutes would go by without me thinking about it!)

Celebrate with some beer, carbs and sweets :-)

Congrats!  I am also one year, around the same time as your diagnosis, July 26th.  I was on vacation at this time!  I purchased a wisteria plant to mark the occassion.  I enjoy your posts very much!

Jenny you are right on.  I remember the first year and how EVERYTHING in my life was breast cancer.  I am three years out now and live pretty much a normal life.  I never thought i would be able to wake up in the morning again without my first thought being....."I have cancer".  Well I was wrong.  I wake up most days with thoughts of what my day will be and "cancer" doesn't even come to mind.

    Congratulations to you!

I agree with what you said about posting for the newbies.  After they find out that there are plenty of women out there 5 years + and that they have a life ahead of them, then their thoughts are going to go back to the more immediate future of "how do I get through this??"  Well, it ain't necessarily pretty, but we get through it!  And we get the scars to prove it!  I look forward to next years post from you!

Cheers Jenny!  Tons of changes for you and many good ones.  You and your family have so much to celebrate.  I love your terminology - screwed up event.  I could never find the right words for it but thanks to you I now have.  People use the term journey which is so over used and just not accurate for me.

Well, it is a long weekend in Canada so we are off fishing near Kenora, Ontario.
