Just some questions....
After reading this forum, it made me think about a few questions regarding my plan of care. I was dx'd with DCIS, approx 5mm (I think). ER+/PR+, Grade 3, My surgeon doesn't feel that a node biopsy is necessary, nor did he mention an MRI. Is this unusual? I have a very strong family hx (aunts, mother, sister). Just wondering...

I, myself would want the MRI. If the BS hasn't mentioned MRI then you can mention it. I'd also suggest you think about getting a second opinion if you don't get the answers you want from the BS.

Hi RN,
I also was diagnosed with DCIS, ER+/PR+, Grade 3. My BS did have me get an MRI on both breasts to see if any other suspicious areas showed up. I had a sentinel node biopsy because I opted for a BMX. Once all the breast tissue is removed, the dye cannot be injected so a SNB can't be done. If you're thinking about a lumpectomy, it is my understanding that SNB is not done with DCIS. Since you have a strong family hx, I would ask about genetic testing for the BRCA1/BRCA2 genes. With DCIS, you have some time to get other opinions so if you're not getting the full picture from your BS, get a 2nd opinion. Best of Luck to you.

Hi - I agree with rc778 and while you are waiting for the BRCA testing perhaps have your biopsy tissue sent out to another pathology lab, one that works with bc. This is easy just ask your bs to send out the tissue for you for a second opinion and you can either suggest to him/her WHERE you want it to be tested or use your bs advise - who he/she feels is a good choice. I called up my bs and said I wanted a second opinion and I had decided on Vanderbilt but there are many other's that are really good. And I did get a different read from Vanderbilt... Now when it comes to the BRCA gene testing if you are negative of course that is a powerful tool to not go to extremes, but the "map" that the genetic counselor uses, putting all of your family history with cancer on a visual map, really helped me see how vulnerable I was to cancer, it is and incredible tool IMO. Good luck and I hope things go well - one thing I always recommend is to add a therapist to your list of specialists (if that can be done) because when it comes to cancer EVERYONE has an opinion and it can be incredibly difficult to find your own voice with all the advice floating around and it is the job of a therapist to help you hear your own voice... Take care!

Ditto on what rc778 said - I had 10 mm DCIS and only maternal grandmother with BC and they ordered MRI - I opted for BRCA testing, came back negative and I still decided to proceed with BMX. I think each woman should do whatever is best for her and the more information you have to decide with the better.
