I asked my onc. about putting me on zometa to reduce risk of bone cancer. He said no. It wasn't approved for that.  How did you get your onc.'s to prescribe. Also, my onc. said that it can cause jaw issues (I forget what this is called).  I'd be curious to know what your dr.'s are saying.  Do other bisphosphonates (e.g.,fossomax) offer protection against mets?

Thank you! Rachel

this is a hotly debated issue. my onc says it doesn't help prevent bone mets, and felt it isn't prudent to "keep throwing things" at us when we're already doing other treatment. (i should say my former onc :(, who just moved to Cali)....he is very smart, trained at Hopkins, and knows his stuff. i was disappointed but accepted he knows better (and i know this makes me sound like  a sheep, which i'm not, but really, he's the only one in the room who did medical school, fellowship, residency, and 10 years' of practice).

not sure about other bisphosphonates. i'm sure other gals will chime in with the info.

    good luck
