I't's been 4 1/2 years since my stage 2b breast cancer. I am currently taking Arimidex and I've also been on  Zometa for prevention of recurrance for 3 years now.  My onc said no more zometa since the Austrian study only followed women for 3 years. My tumor was grade 3 I had one positive node. I have no side effects from zometa infusions and would like to continue for 2 more years.  Have any of you who've had early stage breast cancer been on Zometa more than 3 years or heard of a study that went beyond 3 years?

It was reported onJune 4th, that the early stage BC women who were enrolled in the original Austrian study continue to do well two years past the completion of the twice yearly for three years Zometa protocol. Furthermore, the study said that the women over 40 who received it, were doing the best. I don't know of any studies being conducted that continued the Zometa longer for early stage BC. Would be interesting to find out. There was the AZURE study as well that looked at stage II/III women over 5 years, but the benefit was questionable except for women who were 5 years post menopausal. I think there are still some more on going studies that can hopefully answer your question.
