Please help. I am 51 and have just found out that the Brca1 mutation is in our family. Waiting for my test results now. Pretty sure it will be positive. I am so scared because of my age. Every other story I read is about young women. I feel like I have found out this information too late. Should I have surgery to prevent breast and ovarian cancer or am I too old to consider this? I just hope I haven't found out too late to do something. Anybody else older when they found out?

I was 45 when diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer last December. Later found out that I am also BRCA1 positive. You can find lots of good info on this home page and also on another website called Force. Its www.facingourrisk.orgI believe. You can get some info on getting the surgeries to prevent the cancer and other info on the different types of this gene mutation. The best thing is to talk to your doctor about the results and the genetic counselor as well. They moight be more up to date on other options for you. You have to remember make the best choice for yourself that you are more comfortable with. Wishing you much calmness as you await your results.
