Question...

My mom is 60 years old with Stage 4, Triple negative cancer, with mets to the brain and lymph nodes. About a month ago she started getting a rash to her left breast around the port, they checked her port to make sure it wasn't that, started her on antibiotics, but the rash kept getting bigger. The ended up admitting her to the hospital due to her high fevers and rash (now they are thinking cellulitis), they did IV antibiotics, but the rash kept spreading. They did a biopsy of the rash and it came back cancer. Two weeks ago the rash was just covering her left breast, now it is covering the right breast, chest wall, going around to her back and shoulders. The rash is now looking leathery. I thought the Dr. said this was metastasized cancer, but is that the same thing as IBC? With in the last month she has gotten so weak, isn't eating much and care barely perform her own cares. The doctor started her on Carboplatin and Gemcitabine hydrochloide twice a week. He said these chemos would be tolerable, but I'm so scared for her because she is already so week. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Adom sorry to hear about your mom.  The doctors are telling you that the breast cancer IBC has spread to her skin thus metastasized. To answer your question, yes, it is the same.  Hope you mom responds and is strong enough to tolerate the new chemo protocol.

    Love n hugs.  Chrissy

Hi Adom:  I am sorry to hear your mum is having such a rough time and hope that the chemo will help her quickly.  I believe the doctors are telling you that it is metastatic breast cancer that is now in the skin.  It's good that you are there for your mum, but hard on everyone so I hope you can keep strong and your mum can tolerate the chemo, she does need to try to keep up her strength as the chemo is so harsh on the body.

    Big hugs to you. Kathy
