SHINGLES

Options

Before treatment, with your doctors approval, each of those beginning treatment should seriously consider Shingles Vaccine.

With your immune system compromised by the different treatments, shingles is a real and unpleasant possibility.  It is not fatal, of course, but is very painful and the last thing you need to go through with all the other things that are happening.

Discuss this with your doctor.

Gentle hugs, Shirlann

It sucks. Just getting over shingles (week 5). The vaccine used to be for 60+. It was just approved for 50+ this March!

Do note that shingles is not that common of an SE but let me tell you when you fall into that small percentage it sucks.

Hi there, I had shingles as well. It was on my back and travelled the nerve path.  My physician gave me prednisone and antibitoics as well as some drug used for herpes (valtrex).  All worked well and I am fine now.  The shingles appeared after radiation along with a lovely case of mouth thrush.  Apparently my immune system was a bit down. Both cleared up though with the shingles, the spot on my back still feels odd. It doesnt hurt, its just tingly all the time.  I wansnt given a vaccine for it.

good luck with your case and I hope your physician is working with you to treat this properly,

Wow. I felt like I was the only woman ever to get shingles after BMX surgery (mine came on @ 18 days post op), so I looked up the keyword "shingles" on this board and I was surprised to see a huge number of posts on the topic, including this one. A vaccine would have been a fantastic idea, in hindsight (I'm "just" 45 and it was never mentioned). At first I thought I had a yeast skin rash from antibiotics, but when it transitioned to painful blisters yesterday I went to the doctor.

Here's hoping other women see this BEFORE their BC treatment and ask their docs about the vaccine. It is so, so miserable to have shingles just as I start to feel well after surgery. I feel "lucky" that mine was caught early, before it went everywhere. I can't even imagine how awful a serious case would be.
