I am hoping to find a very skilled hair dresser within a couple of hours from my home.My hair came in very slowly after chemo, but this past spring it was long enough so I could put it in a very tiny pony tail (never thought I would be thrilled with that,a pony tail has always been a given for me)and was getting soft(instead of feeling like straw) and having some life in it.I then had two surgeries in three weeks, hard recoveries..went to get my hair cut by my regular and she had to keep cutting and cutting as she said it was so lifeless.I love this woman, but my hair was always so easy to cut before cancer,it pretty much fell in place no matter what.I need to find someone who can cut my hair in a more up to date style, maybe be some highlights....Binghamton is close for me,Syracuse is doable.I am doubley bummed over this,as my attempt at recon failed..so not only do I have an ugly hair cut,I have an ugly lumpy sore chest...I was so looking forward to feeling a little attractive for the first summer in a long time..let's not even get into the weight I have put on....Figure I will start at the top and work my way down!

Hi pandazankar!  I would start by going to Sally beauty supply and telling them you had cancer and ask what would be best to use on your hair.  There are shampoos that help it to grow quickly, and of course 100 strokes a night helps. That straw feeling is the chemo drugs, and your hair has to grow in long enough to get rid of all of that.  Once the brillo pad is gone, I'd call around to smaller hairdressers and find someone who is experienced at it, or even someone that you hit it off on the phone with.  Not a chain or a mall place, and not necessarily a specialist, just someone experienced who understands what you want.  I was referred to a girl in Elbridge, she did a beautiful job of getting rid of the brillo pad and doing a stylish cut at the same time, but that is a long way for you if you're near Binghamton.  Good luck!

Thanks for replying.I thought back on it and realized the night before I went in for the cut I had used a different conditioner,it was the kind you rinse out,but I thought it was leave in.....Duh....I was still on pain meds, so when she told me it was lifeless,I didn't even think to ask her if the conditioner could have made it limp....which I know now it did.She didn't wash my hair,it was a chilly day and I don't like to blow it dry.So she kind of misted it and cut it.There is nothing bad on my hair, all the bad stuff is long gone.It feels great. She cut it short ,but in an old lady cut.We are very rural and she does a lot of elderly ladies as she is the only hairdresser in town.I know if I went to someone who was more up on current styles, they could fix it,I just don't know where to go.
