A couple of questions
Hi everyone,
Got a diagnosis of DCIS grade 1/3 comedo on Friday in my left breast. I have a consult with the surgeon this Thursday.
I had noticed that the sensation in my nipple in that breast had decreased over the past little while which I had simply attributed to aging. I just turned 44 the beginning of last month. After the biopsy, full sensation returned to the nipple. It is now 3 weeks since the biopsy and I'm noticing that sensation is decreasing again. Do you think this could be related to the DCIS and should I mention it to the surgeon on Thursday?
Also, what does grade 1/3 comedo mean in terms of aggressiveness? From what I have read comedo is usually associated with grade 3, not grade 1. I can't find anything pertaining to grade 1 comedo.
Thanks in advance.
Natalie

Sorry you joined the club.
I haven't had the same experience with nipple sensation, but I think you should mention it to the surgeon (no reason not to mention it, and who knows - it might be related).
Agree with your thoughts re grade 1/3 comedo. Another thing to discuss with the surgeon.
Good luck!

Thanks sweatyspice.
I saw the surgeon yesterday. She told me that I most likely have higher than grade 1 because of the comedonecrosis. While it does not affect treatment, I wanted to know aggressiveness to help me determine whether or not I wanted to discuss the possibility of skipping radiation. I have decided that a reduction in recurrence rate from 35% to 5% percent is worth the 5 weeks of radiation for me.
MRI is next Thursday. I hope it doesn't find anything else because lumpectomy with 5 weeks of radiation sounds VERY doable to me
Also, she felt that change in nipple sensation was not related.

Hi Eklypse
I am new here and joined on behalf of my sister (she is age 45) who has not got a computer so cannot join herself, and it is her that I want to tell you about. Last June she developed an itchy nipple and went to see the doc, he said it was eczema and gave her steroid cream, it did not clear it up and she more or less forgot about it, it would still itch though but I think she got so used to that it became the norm for her, anyway in March this year she had to go back to the doc's for an allergic reaction to some hair dye and as an after thought mentioned that she still had this itchy nipple and there was a small area of skin thickening too and could it be Paget's disease, he didn't know but sent her off to the breast clinic to be checked, at the clinic they said that it was indeed just eczema, of course she was relived, then they said they would do a mamo to be on the safe side, that showed up micro calcifications and a biopsy followed, that showed up DCIS in two areas, one area very near to the nipple, they said it was medium to high grade comedo necrosis and the best treatment was mastectomy as it was in the two places you see, so she has recently undergone the mastectomy with reconstruction using an implant.
Since I have been trying to find out all the info on her behalf I did come across some literature, the only literature that said symptoms can sometimes show as a discharge from the nipple area, or you can feel a small lump, or you can develop an itchy nipple, the breast clinic are still insistent that this itchy nipple was nothing to do with the DCIS, but I am afraid that we believe different, we are all individual and our bodies act in different ways and not everybody is going to present as a text book case, maybe some ppl are just more sensitive and yours could also have a link, I would mention it to the surgeon, good luck, please let us know how you get on.
