Soy Allergy-do any treatments contain soy?

Options

I just happened to see a mention of soy in one of the threads and it made me wonder if any of the treatments contain soy.

Then I thought, what difference does it make?  Soy causes me to have anaphylactic shock symptoms and makes my hair fall out, among other things.

Does anyone know?  Am I asking too soon? Right now I'm only on herceptin and arimidex. Thanks for your help.

Wow, anaphylactic shock is obviously extremely serious.  I would think you would want to contact the manufacturer of any drug that's RX'd for you to ask about possible soy derivative content.  So many natural supplements are forumated with soy ingredients.  That would be such a hard one to avoid!   Do you also have a problem with it in creams, lotions or other topical applications?

dlb823 - I don't use any soy based topical products. It's really strange but I can eat soy sauce and can tolerate soy oil, but I get symptoms when I've unknowingly had soy protein. I understand that if soy is prepared a certain way, the properties change. In any case, any food labels that read soy, I stay away from.

I'll be sure to tell my oncologist whenever she has to change treatments. By the way, whenever I'm in the hospital for surgery, they have to change the general anesthesia that they usually use because it contains soy. It's propofol or diprivan and contains 10% soy.

From what I understand, soy protein isolate (the powder, which is also used in energy bars) is a much more concentrated form of soy.  Maybe that's why it bothers you more than natural soy products.  Someone in my family has an allergy to nuts, and she has went into anaphylactic shock when given a post-surgery drug that evidently had molecular similarities to nuts.  And her allergy seems to be getting worse over the years.  So do be careful!!!    Deanna

Deanna, thanks for your input. Last night, I prepared a package of organic vegetables with a light cheese sauce. There were no soy ingredients. Two  hours later, I had trouble breathing and heavy palpitations. The veggie wrapper said it contained corn protein. Now I'm very concerned.

Also, this brings to mind that when I'm undergoing surgery I have to tell the anesthesiologist that I'm allergic to soy because the standard anesth (properol?) contains soy. Even though they've been aware of this and changed the anesth, the last two times I woke up from surgery I had great difficulty breathing.  I told the nurses but was ignored.  This feeling went away, but now I'm wondering if there is anything else that they give  me when I'm under that contains some form of soy.

Tell a medical professional that you're allergic to soy and they have no idea why you're telling them.
