Ex-boyfriend's mother just diagnosed

I feel extremely guilty and somewhat responsible for my ex-boyfriend's mother's recent diagnosis of breast cancer. We just broke up a month ago after being together for four years, all because of something stupid that I did, and while he and I are managing to stay friends, his family is still angry at me. His mom was like a mother to me and now I found this out. I want to support her but I don't know what to do that won't make this situation worse. Also, my ex is still in shock because we just found out today so even though I want details to help me cope with it, he's not ready to talk about it. I would appreciate any advice because I am so scared and confused.
