Wow, sandymess, great sunset pic, Firefox won't let me copy and paste either. How did you get your pics to post?

Mary, I uploaded them to Picasa, then right clicked and clicked on 'copy image location', then put that info into the box here that says 'image url'. Hope that helps! Here's a pic from northern Maine. A bald eagle!

OK, I think I tried that before but let me give it another shot:

    Bahama Sunset

Yay!  Small, but visible. This is a painting I did from a photo taken at sunset while sailing in the Bahamas about 20 years ago.

Caerus-Sunflower, so happy to be an honorary member of the Sisterhood of the Honorable Scar, I already had a tattoo -- a large dolphin swimming around what used to be my left breast. The surgeon managed to save most of the dolphin, who now swims around the honorable scar. I only have the old picture, tried to make it G-rated.  Smile

I think that is the MOST MOST MOST gorgeous "breast" I've ever seen!!!  I just LOVE your Spirit!

Have you ever heard Carly Simon singing "The Scar" - it's on the "Bedroom" Album I think  - if you google it, you can get the words - you'll love it too!

As a child, I lived on the shore in CT, and my favorite activity was to watch the DOLPHINS we could see from our house, on the horizon - of the Sound - still love them, tho it's been about 50 years since I've seen them!

I hadn't heard "The Scar" but I've always loved Carly Simon, forgot that she'd survived breast cancer. Another cancer goddess!  I love these lines:

    There's a wise woman
She sits at the end of the bar
She says Look for the signs
You won't have to look far
Lead with your spirit and follow
    Follow your scar

I forgot that she's a survivor, too. Never heard that song either, though I am a big fan of hers. I liked these lines best: Run with the red deer

    And sing with the wind

    The magic lasts

    And meaning will follow

    The scar is God given

As a sign for your life

So happy to have ther Carly Simon "fans" who like The Scar - my favorite part was ( paraphrased) about how it takes a really good man to like a really good scar!!!!

Mary, you are SO talented! Wow!! I would love to be able to do what you do. What kind of paints do you use? Do you sketch it out first? (I'm showing my ignorance.) Just amazing! Okay, now I'm kicking you in the behind. Get to work and FINish this masterpiece!! ;-)

These are oils, and you should see how many layers are underneath even this rough layout. That's why I love painting with oils... if it's still wet you can just rub it out, if it's dry you can paint over it. My teacher's method is to cover the whole canvas with a neutral color and then block out the main shapes with a slightly darker neutral color, then move in a layer with suggestions of the actual colors and some general details, about what I have here. You can see I moved the owl a bit to the right of center, but the branches need a much finer line, not sure yet how to do that. Anyway, thanks for the kick.  Wink

I found a great time-lapsed YouTube video of a oil painter showing how the layers are applied with succeedingly greater detail: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1JSLTmxDbA&feature=player_embedded. He offers online classes with downloadable DVDs. I think I'll take one - the class I looked at is $25 and you can set it up (and repeat) whenever you feel like it.

That is incredible ... what a great shot!

I'm really looking forward to next Saturday.  It's my youngest daughters Junior Prom.  I hope to upload some photos next weekend!  She picked out a floor length green dress and is having her hair professionally done ...

Since I've been back to work, it's been hard to have any strength left to do much...but I wouldn't miss that day for anything.

    WOW, Lisa, that's fantastic...

As soon as I master "perspective" it would be a challenge to draw it.  I've become very interested in "botanical drawing" - using a fantastic paperback book Botanical Drawing in Color - by Wendy Hollender to teach myself.  Hollender is very skilled, and really seems to know how to TEACH!  She's at New York Botanical Gardens - on staff.  I use the pencils she recommends - Faber Castell Polychromos.

WOW what a difference using Artist Grade materials - just amazing.  Giving all my old Crayolas & Prangs to neighborhood kids ;)

Caerus-Sunflowers, you'll have to show us one of your drawings when you finish.

Fuzzy, can't wait to see some gorgeous prom pics. Sorry to hear you are so exhausted. Hope it passes soon for you.

Pil - I did start a photo documentary that I had put into a book through Shutterfly...it's very expressive and may be something you might be interested in for your book...I'll have to check out your link.  My family loved it - once I saw their expressions, I knew I captured what I was going after.
