Ladies, I did it!!  I finally won!!

As many of you know, I've had a battle with my onc, gp and gynos all over this damn city to get my ovaries out and no one, and I mean no one, would touch me.  One reason I got was that I was over-reacting and the other reason is because my private insurance pays for my Zoladex shots, I'm not a priority.

I got a name of a new gyno from a fellow BC sister.  I only met her once or twice but she told me her gyno didn't even blink when she asked to get her ovaries removed.  I got his name and my GP sent my referral.

My appt was today and it was 4 hours away.  My DH drove me to my appt and met with the gyno and you know what??  He told me that he was 200% in agreement with me to have them removed.  I was so happy to hear him say that, I could  have kissed him!  Now I wait for the call for my surgery!

I guess what I'm trying to say, is that if you believe in something -  go for it.  Don't let it go, someone, somewhere will listen.  This gyno did.

Kim, I am in awe of how you are controlling your own destiny and being proactive with your disease.  I myself, and a now deceased friend of mine, have been led astray by our doctors and we will never understand what they were thinking.  I was 'misdiagnosed' as a stage IV, but I did not have it on any bones or organs???? They said because of my lymph.  Because of that they gave me carbo/taxol/avastin which is more of a stage IV drug combo for lung/liver mets.  They just look in the guide book and look under stage IV and the type of cancer you have and pick what ever is the first drug listed.  My primary doc told that to my DH.  I should have been given the DD AC and then DD taxol as is what most people get at the first dx.  I was not proactive and did not understand and now my cancer is resistant to treatment.

As for my friend, she started with stage I, slightly ER+, and by the end of 3 lumpectomies she only had 'thin' margins.  She kept requesting a masectomy and they wouldn't do it. Really?  After 3 shots at getting it all out I would insist on a masectomy too.  It was her biggest regret.  She also wanted her ovaries out because of the ER+ part.  She did her research as best she could and the doctors did not agree with her.  They refused and said 'overkill.  What a word.  They called her 'cancer free' but that only lasted for around 18months.  they found a spot on her liver and her onc said it was probably a cyst and not to worry about it.  I think if  you have cancer every spot should be of high concern and not brushed off.  She finally went somewhere else around 3 months later and by that time she had several spots on her liver.  She switched her care to mass general and when she went there she said 'I want my f-ing ovaries out!', and they took them out without question even though she was now stage IV for sure.  She battled another 2 years and just passed in Jan leaving 2 young daughters behind.  She was a vibrant, healthy, very fit person with a cancer caught early and really should have been one to make it.

As I look around these boards and read people's bios, I see that most of us that end up on the dark side of this get there because of poor decision making along the way.  It's not that the treatments are not there and if done correctly there can't be a very postive outcome for even the most serious of cases, but you zig when you should have zagged and that seems to make all the difference.  So good for you, you are an inspiration.

    Linda
