Enough is enough
I think I had it......
Since 2 years I am asking my doc the same thing. ZOMETA.
He refuses to give it to me. I said that the heck, its my body.
He gave me a long speech, across the border they do lots of things, bla, bla, bla.
I am letting go. I asked a couple of docs, all of them agree.NO ZOMETA.
Today was my 3 months visit, and my doc gave me a huge hug, and said, look, you are in better shape than me, for me if you continue, you will get a heart condition. He said, I really am convinced that you are not going to die of breast cancer, so stop worrying, and let me take care of you.
I have to let go. No Zometa.
What do you girls think.
Best,
Carol

Hi Carol,
I just want to check what you are asking - are you asking about taking Zometa as a preventative for a recurrence, or because you have osteopenia? if it is to prevent a recurrence, i think the medical opinionhas changed in the last 6 months because of the results of the Azure study, and it is no longer being recommended. At least this is the case in Israel - previously it was standard of care here, but now it is not recommended. does this help you come to peace with your decision?

I don't get Zometa but do take Fosamax. My doc sounds like your doc in regard to saying no to Zometa. I do, in fact, have osteoporosis thanks to chemo, early menopause, blah blah blah.
I say let your doc do the worrying for you. I like that he said that. Exhale and know that you are doing what the doctor ordered.

Hi
I had the opposite problem-- I did not want zometa and my Dana Farber onc was suggesting it at the end of my treatment in 2009---- I asked her if we could wait 6 months--back I went, she was less certain--- so I decided to wait another 6 months, in which the opinions about it changed--so we will see what she says in May......
I have a bone density test scheduled then as well--- once i see the results of that, I will think about what to do, if anything.
I agree-let him worry--- somehow, for me, I instinctively knew that zometa was not for me-- not sure why--I just felt it in my gut.....

My onc talked to me about zometa after I finished my rads, but then when I went back for the next appt. to get it, she suggested we wait until the study came out. Initially I was a bit anxious about not getting it.
After the study came out that didn't show a protective effect, we decided not to do it. I am comfortable with it now. It's not the standard of care and it's still up in the air as to what the benefits really are. Perhaps in the future they will find out that it is beneficial.
There are always new advances coming out. All we can do is the best we can do with what we have available at the time. The good news is that most of us will be OK. Some will not despite all the best treatments.
{Hugs}

Carol, my Onc more or less has said it is up to me whether I continue or not. She said she "doesn't know" if it will help prevent a recurrence, but she does know it will be good for my bones (early menopause, arimidex, blah, blah) So, I am sticking with it. I have a BMD in May, it will be interesting to see what my bones are like.
It sounds as though your Onc is very happy with how things are going. I would celebrate that!

First of all, sorry my English is sometimes getting worse. ( Spelling.)
Kerry, You are in Ontario, not across the border. So why in the first place you got the Zometa.
Anyhow, I am getting tired of this Zometa discussion. I have to learn to accept. He mentioned again how VERY important exercise is. Its not only the fat burning, its much more to it.
So I will focus on exercise and healthy food.
Sherri,
You are my life saver xoxoxoxoxo You have no idea ((((( HUGS )))))
Today I had a glass of wine, the first glass of alcohol since over 2 years. WOW, what a treat.

Mamita...whenn I was on AI's, I asked my onc about Zometa....he felt that the Actonel did just as well...I was okay with it and I really didn't want to be in the infusion room....I've been off the AI's for a year this month so will only have BMD every 2 years and my pcp will Rx them.....

Add me to the no Zometa camp. Good to see you, Carol...and glad you enjoyed your wine!
