Diagnosis, family history and X rays
I was diagnosed with DCIS Stage 0 no invasive Aug 2009. There is a family history. My mom was diagnosed at 21 and lived to be 81. I always told her she must be the longest living cancer patient.I have a niece who was also diagnosed at age 30 in 2005. Now I have 4 granddaughters I worry about. They wont be able to start mammograms till they are 40 but with the family history and my niece being 30 it is a worry.
Even though my cancer was a low grade and non invasive I have worries. Many classmates and friends have breast cancer now or have passed away with it. unbelieveable. Most have lived for years. My friend of many years is a 16 year survivor and doing great with Stage 3 invasive. She's had no problems since. When she was diagnosed I was upset she didn't get a masectomy but now I see things differently. It has to be the choice of the individual and the doctors. My Surgeon took my situation to a doctors convention asking what should be done in my case.It came back the doctors said lumpectomies (2 more benign tumors were found after the malignant), no chemo or radiation and take tamoxifn. That has been 1.5 years and things are fine. I feel OK but see where so many are at least getting radiation with my stage but no chemo. That is my only worry but to late now and things are working out.Just some thinning of my hair with the tamoxifin but will continue it.
my worry now is last year I had a CT scan of the pelvic area.It showed Kidney stones.I wasn't told till this year by a urologist who got the Xray.I was shocked. My gastro doctor never told me when he looked at the scan.So a year later I am told.Had a procedure done on my bladder to make sure no cancer.None was found but I didn't stay with that urologist. He insisted on another CT scan I refused and found another doctor.Saw the new urologist yesterday and he said he wanted me to get a KUB(low radiation scan) I didnt want to but he insisted. So now I am concerned about these radiation tests.I want nothing but a ultrasound or MRI but they insist either a CT scan or a KUB.I like the new urologist but if he insists on another KUB within the next year I will turn it down.Insist a Ultrasound or MRI.Just my feelings.I've been to my family doctor and my surgeon. They listen but don't really give me any insight. The family doctor said get a new urologist and I did that.
Have some of you that have been diagnosed keep getting X rays for other things.I know we need our mammograms yearly but not sure i like these other invasive x rays.I see my oncologist soon and will be deciding on what I will do the next time.I don't have to go through the annual blood test to check for markers etc since my cancer is gone and non invasive.I was explained my cancer being non invasive is not coming back BUT could be diagnosed with another type of breast cancer. It won't spread to other organs.
With this diagnosis and my mom living so many years I wonder if my cancer is what she had for 60 years. In the 1940's they probably didn't know different types. My mom did have a radical masectomy and no problems whatsoever for all those years.
