I just heard an interview with the scientist who discovered BRCA1 gene. She's local at the University of Washington. She makes her research public because "if public money paid for it (NIH), the public should have access to it." She said there's a new test being developed. Women will have a choice of ways to be tested and can't be held hostage to one manufacturer who can charge anything they please. YAY!! We need more like her.

I heard something this morning that courts were trying to rule on if it was legal to paten and limit access to something such as genes like this

sorry if I am not more clear but it sounded possitive to me~

It's very positive. No human genes can be patented. It means anyone can do research on the gene, not just the company with the patent.

Great news....Let's get behind the courts......there is power in numbers....speed it up. Companies cried foul for years...now is their chance to do something about it......

When my sisters both got cancer after me - I was thinking to see if it is BRCA, but if it is - my daughter would be checking like she is already doing, but if I'm not - wouldn't that just give us a false hope that She wouldn't get it???

My MO said for me now it doesn't do any good anyway.. besides, with no insurance I couldn't afford it anyway.  I am so confused.

The Geneticitist told my daughter that me, and the other Grandmother (who had BC at 52) need to get the Braca done, for my granddaughter......she did not say my daughter.....my husband had Pancreatic cancer, my mother Colon....she said that ups her chances even more....there is a connection with those types if present in a family.

It is not just having BC cancer history.....that is a myth that it is only BC, that needs the Braca test and many are not aware of that......geneticists are way more thorough then any other Specialist...

They were looking for Connective Tissue Disease in my grandson and granddaughter, because they found scoliosis in both of them and they had other symptoms and after reading 5 pages of background family history told my daughter that Braca needs to be done.....it is confusing until a Geneticist gets involved, they explain it clearly......

In my case it would be for my daughter.. She doesnt want to know...She has no health insurance, and would not consider doing anything about it right now anyway.

The BRCA test was not even discussed with me. I'm interested in what Ducky said about the link with colon and pancreatic, because 2 grandmothers died of those. I have no risk factors for BC - but I have it. DD keeps saying that no relatives isn't the same as well relatives and perhaps she is right.

Wow that is a lot of Peeps.........congrats and a happy Fathers Day

to Bro and his Little Cluckers.......

Sandy......they have connected Colon, and Pancreatic to BC and Ovarian also......that is why they want me tested for my GD, since my mother had Colon, and husband Pancreatic......both dead, so since I have BC, and still alive they want to test me for Braca's...and the other Grandmother has BC, plus my husbands mother, and her sister.....

The Geneticist said both sides count, not just the mothers...that is a myth......

Mary, does that mean you need to make a yearly birthday cake with 20000 candles?

hate to mention but the chicks we had as kids became Sunday dinner so hoping the family does not get too attached?
