According to a 2007 study at the California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute, cannabidiol (CBD) may stop breast cancer from spreading throughout the body. These researchers believe their discovery may provide a non-toxic alternative to chemotherapy while achieving the same results minus the painful and unpleasant side effects. The research team says that CBD works by blocking the activity of a gene called Id-1, which is believed to be responsible for a process called metastasis, which is the aggressive spread of cancer cells away from the original tumor site.
AbstractInvasion and metastasis of aggressive breast cancer cells is the final and fatal step during cancer progression, and is the least understood genetically. Clinically, there are still limited therapeutic interventions for aggressive and metastatic breast cancers available. Clearly, effective and nontoxic therapies are urgently required. Id-1, an inhibitor of basic helix-loop-helix transcription factors, has recently been shown to be a key regulator of the metastatic potential of breast and additional cancers. Using a mouse model, we previously determined that metastatic breast cancer cells became significantly less invasive in vitro and less metastatic in vivo when Id-1 was down-regulated by stable transduction with antisense Id-1. It is not possible at this point, however, to use antisense technology to reduce Id-1 expression in patients with metastatic breast cancer. Here, we report that cannabidiol (CBD), a cannabinoid with a low-toxicity profile, could down-regulate Id-1 expression in aggressive human breast cancer cells. The CBD concentrations effective at inhibiting Id-1 expression correlated with those used to inhibit the proliferative and invasive phenotype of breast cancer cells. CBD was able to inhibit Id-1 expression at the mRNA and protein level in a concentration-dependent fashion. These effects seemed to occur as the result of an inhibition of the Id-1 gene at the promoter level. Importantly, CBD did not inhibit invasiveness in cells that ectopically expressed Id-1. In conclusion, CBD represents the first nontoxic exogenous agent that can significantly decrease Id-1 expression in metastatic breast cancer cells leading to the down-regulation of tumor aggressiveness. I wouldn't tout this as a "cure" since every cancer has its own genetic links, but it is worth a trial. Since so many states have medical mj, it should be easy for a researcher to collect that data.

You forgot something important in these studies that go back to 2007:
However, the researchers point out that while their findings are promising they are not a recommendation for people with breast cancer to smoke marijuana. They say it is highly unlikely that effective concentrations of CBD could be reached by smoking cannabis. And while CBD is not psychoactive it is still considered a Schedule 1 drug.
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/08/060814094901.htm----------------------------------------There are similar promising studies for many new leads each week. Plants, chemicals, proteins, enzymes, genes that help or suppress spread etc. Mj is not unique in being promising yet not being actively researched. I notice there is a culture of people touting mj online and this is the fourth such post you have made. This is a support site for those of us who have had or are supporting someone with breast cancer.

I beg to disagree. I am a cancer survivor ... check my stats. I have been a member since I was diagnosed in Oct of 2008. I did all the drug protocols my team of docs advised - I threw all of them up.
I tried cannabis after my swap surgery instead of Phenegrin to keep from throwing up the oxycodone/vicodin/darvocet that was prescribed (my sensitive body rejects many pharmaceuticals) and it worked.
I do not advocate smoking it - in smoked form it has more carcinogens than cigarettes.
But in a food form (tincture, candy, butter, etc) it works better for me than Phenegrin to keep from throwing up. It also works better for me than oxycodone/vicodin/darvocet for managing pain (one hard candy will manage my pain for 4 to 6 hours with no psychotorpic effect - inside my body if feels just like a darvocet). I also use salve now daily for the aches and strain I feel across my reconstruction zone (basically armpit to armpit across the chest) as I do my daily life (wonderful for after vacuuming and the armpits hurt). And as if this isn't enough, one brownie and I'm asleep like a baby for a solid 8 hours - no more Ambien. My mood is great - no more Celexia. All these Pharmaceiticals were prescribed by my surgeon, primary care and plastic surgeon after my bi-lateral - all replaced now with Cannabis. And in my state where medical marijuana is legal, all this relief is FREE, I get my meds from a licensed, certified, organic grower ! I am saving thousands a year by not buying the prescriptions and I am happy with my natural approach. This is a viable option for breast cancer patients - I am living proof.

Actually we don't disagree at all. You are talking about a different use, not a potential cure. I'm all in favour of all studies that show any potential for any substansce, to be followed up. It's frustrating when people like the OP who clearly does not have BC come on here without even introducing themselves, saying they have the "cure". I have more than a 50% chance of dying from this and I don't want to keep reading these headlines and being let down again.
I'd also love to see mj legalised. I have no access here in Australia so you are lucky in those states where it can be used for medical purposes. More power to you.

Hey Sheila, it may not be legal here, but the medicos are not above recomending the use of it. When my F-i-law was in hospital for terminal Prostate Cancer here in 2000, his treating Dr suggested we get him some MJ so that he could get his appetite back, amongst other things. I asked some of the younger generation where we could get it and had a lot of it within an hour. I made it into cookies and put them into a shop bought Arnott's packet and delivered them to Dad in the hospital.
Mind you, I felt so guilty that I would have given myself away if anyone had looked at me cross-wise.
Dad had three of the cookies in short order and had a great 24hrs afterwards, which included a full nights sleep and eating well for the first time in weeks.
When we got home that night, DH and I tried 1 bikkie with a cup of tea and, after mellowing out for a while, ended up worrying about Dad all night long, expecting the police to arrive anytime because he had had a very strong dose of some very strong MJ.
You can get around the legal restrictions if you want, but I'm not sure I'd use it for myself as it made me feel very sick.
Sheila.

I'm living (and soon to be dying) proof that it doesn't work. At least it kept me in a good mood.

Well I am all for the hope, but I was taking Med MJ for several years and I had a recurrence of breast cancer. It sucks but life goes on. In 2006, I didn't know much about BC, now I know a lot. I combined alternative txs with conventional txs and did much better this go round. I am still doing alternative txs and plan to stay the course. I've had all the chemo and rads I want in this life time. Actually I feel better than I have in a longgggg time. I had my mediport taken out last Friday. My onco isn't to pleased, but it time for a change. Anyway, I haven't used the MJ in a while since I am doing so well with the supplements. Later

I expect large amounts of the active ingredient are needed to have a measurable effect.
Now if you want tumours potentially shrunk in a few days, look at the Blushwood bush thread. (EBC-46) Phase 1 trials on humans with skin cancers are to be started soon. Imagine how people will react when they see their pet's cancer melt away in days while their loved one is not able to be helped. Look at the media section on the Q-biotics website to learn more.
It works by causing the body to attack the cancer and heal the wound. It can be injected into tumours but so far is only known to work locally. No guarantees but it does look promising.

Hello Ladies,
I live in in the San Francisco Area, medical marijuana is legal and there are many studies pointing cancer tumors are shrinking from ingested cannabaoids. Rick simpson has a viedo out called RUN FROM THE CURE, and a video showing how to make this medicine. There is some conflicting iformation on the cannabanoid and THC content needed to cure cancer, but the conclusion is you need a very high indica strain with THC and Cananbanoid content to be with in 4 % of each other. and you needto ingest 60 grams in 90 days for it to work, though some claim they used on 16 grams and it worked. Never put all your eggs in one basket, but if its non-invasive, I thought, why not? There are lots of VIdeos and postings. I really want to avaid Chemo and radiation. They say herceptin will do a good job but there is no evidence that it works with out chemo, I'm looking for women who have tried this and are Her 2 NUE 3+ with IDC like me. If any one out there is and have been through this please contact me. I'd really appreciate it very much!
just a few of millions of links for hemp oil and cannabanoids
I contated this doctor, but he says no clinical trials have started yet.
