I'd like an answer too.  My physical therapist recommended I watch the downward facing dogs and similar poses due to the possibility aggravating of lymphadema.

    HI out03doors,

I often do a modified down dog-put a chair back-to against a wall, on your yoga mat. Use the edge of the chair seat to put your hands on and step back until your arms are extended. It's less intense on the wrists, shoulders, etc.

    Namaste,

You might want to find an Iyengar studio where they use ropes and other props to assist with poses. With down dog, the ropes are attached to the wall and circle the upper egs so you can take the pressure off the arms. Down dog with a chair works well, too, but make sure to have a teacher who knows what they are doing to make sure you are not leaning too much weight on the arms. Going in and out of dd to extended child pose might work...check with your PT. In the absence of other alternatives, extended child pose is the alternate "resting" pose.  Good Luck!

     Namaste,

     Dee
