First scan since lumpectomy and not lookin' good

Options

So I had a lumpectomy in September and sailed through the surgery and radiation just fine. Been on tamoxifen since Jan 1. Went in last week for my first followup mammo and ultrasound. I learned today I need to go in on Monday for a "spot diagnostic mammogram." I asked them to fax me the reports from the mammo and ultrasound and it basically says I have a lot of calcification in both breasts. I'm not sure what to think about it, as the ultrasound showed no tumors or cysts. Can you have breast cancer recurrence without tumors or cysts?

I wish he would have just ordered the MRI to begin with. It was enough to get him to agree to do a bilateral mammo and ultrasound; he just wanted to do the breast with the cancer. And then he said I would get the MRI in August.

Just curious, did you opt for no reconstruction because of fear that it would obscure a new cancer? Because if I ever get a double mastectomy I am not sure whether I would do reconstruction or not. Especially since I am very athletic and I wonder how it would affect my movement.

I think in your situation, I would insist on an MRI.  My tumor was not visible on mammo or ultrasound.  I had SO many calcifications, MRI was recommended , and there was the cancer!

If you get to the point of considering a mastectomy, go visit the reconstruction forum.  Lots of wisdom over there!

    Good luck to you!
