DSIL and I made homemade ricotta today on a whim, so one of our pizzas tonight will be a pizza blanco with mushrooms or roasted tomatoes. Love the homemade ricotta. We're also having some slightly sweetened on strawberries we picked from the garden this afternoon. Yum!

Anxious to get back to my own home tomorrow to see if my garden has been ravaged by groundhogs or other varmints.

Up early this morning, doing the last of the packing and cleaning the apartment. We have to say good-bye to Barcelona and get on a plane to Istanbul. I am expecting a completely different type of city, to say the least.

Happy wedding, no pain recovery, be safe from tornados and hail, no groundhogs, good luck to both the DD's, and I am sure I have missed someone and something....

Susan - have a safe trip. Does anyone else remember the song "You can't go back to Constantinople" - around 1955 by the Four Lads? It's one of those that you can't get out of your head whenever you hear the name Istanbul.

Oh yes Minus. Do remember that one though a little b4 my time. Of course I had to go to YouTube to find it. Came with some lovely pictures of Istanbul.

Nancy - missed your comments about your colonoscopy. Hope nothing comes of the "removals".

Susan - wishing you an easy flight to Istanbul and many adventures to come. This is where you have family, right? I still have not gotten back to review the pages I skipped.

Hello from middle of nowhere Illinois! Recently diagnosed and found this forum to be so supportive and helpful. Looks like leftover fixings to make taco salad tonight but great news is it's always yummy. DH cooked up the taco meat and I did all the prepping of veggies.

Welcome Tempy. I am the world's worst at posting but like I said yesterday am trying much better to keep up.

Yum taco salad sounds good. What kind of dressing do you use? I think that might be something to make tomorrow but lol I would need to buy salad. We have actually run out of fresh bread. I have frozen whole wheat grainy stuff for my toast but DH takes a sandwich to work every day on yuck white bread. I think I see a grocery run tomorrow morning.

Have a bunch of bagged chicken breasts thawing. Thinking we will have salsa chicken. I must have 3-4 bags of cheese with just bits left in them. Have a wonderful can of Trappey's black beans with onion, garlic and olive oil. They were supposed to be black bean dip last week for a church function I did not make it to so good use for them tonight.

Tempy welcome. We'll look forward to some new meal ideas.

Luv - OK, enough already. Yes, we've been in a drought for a long time, but you can keep the rest of the rain out there for awhile. I'm heading the team to register residents for the community pool this weekend & next and they'll have to pick their way around puddles & jump out from under thunder claps to be there.

I'm thinking Susan's cousins were from Paris??

Special - did you get a couple of days off after all the cooking for your DD?

Carole - how's it going with the foot today? Recovery day 3 right? Did you say you only have to use the walker for a week? Then what?

Nance - I love the term "earworm". I've never heard it before but I know just what you mean.

Thinking about Bedo at the wedding.

Dunch was most everything that needed to be cooked. A lovely pork loin that I roasted mostly plain - only sprinkled lots of tarragon & dill weed. (and yes I ate 1/2 of it in one sitting) A bag of Steakhouse Roasters (fingerling potatoes if they don't have these in your part of the country) quartered, tossed in olive oil w/garlic and roasted w/the remaining half of a huge 1015 Onion. A couple of organic Jersey sweet potatoes that I baked & will save for tomorrow. Two slices of Rosemary bread. Tomorrow will be a vegetarian meal since I have a bunch of veggies that are approaching end of life.

    tempy - welcome!

I usually use taco sauce for the dressing on my taco salad.  I used to put a dollop of sour cream and one of guacamole, but now just do the guac since I am non-dairy (makes me sound like coffee creamer or whipped topping!) - it kind of mixes with the taco sauce and makes a dressing all by itself - yay!

minus - no rest for the wicked - I had a pre-op this morning at 8:15 for surgery on the 27th, then drove to the base (an hour each way) to get blood work for surgery - military insurance requires I have it done there since they have the lab available, insurance only pays for labs done at the MO office for oncology purposes.  Also picked up a prescription refill for DD while I was there, then drove up to have my car serviced at 1 pm - finally got home about an hour ago due to some wiring snafu to the phone charger thing in the dash.  The good news - I have some pasta leftover that I made for the DD so no cooking tonight!  This is a recipe my MIL made for DH and his sibs - it is called Mulligan Goulash - no idea why.  She usually made it when she and my FIL were going out for the evening - it is easy and good.  Everything in your dunch sounds glorious!

Dinner was a delicious Lima bean and chicken soup delivered by a golf friend and her Dh, who may have cooked it. There is also a container of red bean soup. Along with the soup we had multi-grain bread and butter. The bread was included in the food delivery.

Another golf friend is providing dinner tomorrow night. I'm really grateful for the kindness and generosity

We are in Istanbul. What a fascinating place this is, and I have hardly seen any of it yet! The manager of our apartment spent WAY too long with us last night. By the time it was all done, it had been at least 8 hrs since we had had any water. We headed out around 9pm and the first ATM was money free. Thank goodness we persevered and went to a second location. Cash in hand, we looked for food. Ended up on a quiet pedestrian street where we got the "sample plate" and shish kebobs. The sampler plate included two eggplant preparations, a nut-hot pepper mixture of some kind, hummus, yogurt with cucumbers and yogurt with dill and garlic, a small green salad, and a large stuffed grape leaf. The pita was freshly baked with sesame seeds sprinkled liberally on top. A few cucumber slices completed the plate. The shish kabobs were actually what I would call a kofta, pressed around a skewer for grilling. He got the spicy one, I didn't. They were both excellent. The plate also had a small parsley-red onion salad, grilled green pepper, lots of flatbread, and a mound of bulghar cooked with tomato. It was all very good, and the best part is, none of it made my stomach upset.

We were unable to find cream for coffee at a market so this morning my perfect husband went to the corner Starbucks and here I sit, looking at the Bosphorus drinking the best Starbucks coffee I have ever had. [Usually hate their coffee.]

There are mosques everywhere. Just as many mosques as there were Catholic churches in Spain. For some reason, though we are just outside Taksim Square, a very busy place, I am hearing roosters crowing. And then of course, since we are so close to the Bosphorus, there are constant sea bird calls intermingled with the horns of the shipping traffic.

Hope to see a bunch of stuff today!

    *susan*

ps. Is this BedoDD wedding day?

Susan, that was quite a sample plate. Sounds wonderful. So glad your stomach is behaving.

I believe today is wedding day. Wishing Bedo and her daughter all the best!

Carole, hope your pain is still at bay. I love "food fairies". Good friends indeed.

We are off to the Cardinal baseball game with friends today, so it's ballpark food for us. We'll probably stop at a local steakhouse for dinner. I haven't been to a day game in many years. Of course the forecast calls for rain so I'll have to schlep a jacket with me. I hope they play better than they did last night.

Susan, that sounds like enormous amount of food.

3 inches of rain yesterday and last night. My challenge of the day--washing my hair in the sink and taking washcloth bath.

Probably another day on the nerve block. Still numb with no pain. PBS cooking shows today on TV. Things could be much worse

I don't use any salad dressing just use medium chunky salsa and a dollop of sour cream mixed together to make a dressing. Veggies are shredded lettuce (I don't bother buying it in the bags as I can make it that way in a couple of minutes and much much cheaper), fresh diced tomatoes and onion and sliced black olives. Taco meat mixed with refried beans, shredded mexican cheese and crumpled tortilla chips or cheap taco shells top it all off. I've gone to mexican restaurants and ordered a taco salad and have been very much disappointed with what I got there versus what I can make at home for a fraction of the price.

Tonight is going to be lamb (with some beef thrown in for some fat) burgers, tzatziki sauce, slice of feta cheese and a fried egg on top. Had it at a hole in the wall place shown on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives in Chicago so figured I'd try it at home. Have had the lamb chops in the freezer for a while and DH isn't fond of lamb that way but he does like gyros.

Special K - have fun at MacDill, used to be stationed there and lived in the Tampa area for almost 15 years. Miss my friends, beaches, restaurants, etc etc etc ... maybe after my NSBMX, reconstruction and such are done we'll make it down there again.

Carole, I am so happy that your friends are nurturing you well! Your self care efforts sound really challenging....not sure how well I'd be able to wash hair or do a "sponge bath" on one foot! Good luck!

Am hoping for Bedo that the local forecasted scattered showers choose spots away from her DD's wedding!

Susan, you are such a lovely writer turned "travelogist". Tonight we are seeing our friends who just returned from Spain, so will be thinking of you. So far Istanbul sounds sooo interesting.

This week has been a fast moving blur....

Last Sat grands and co arrived. They actually called from the road before 6PM and asked us to meet them at our local Bertucci's. We did.....and it was so exciting to see everyone. The enthusiastic greetings from the lively grands were so sweet! Then the dinner experience was hair-raising! DDIL had called ahead, (warning them?!) but the restaurant placed us at a table just outside the kitchen in the server path. OY!!! We are not used to managing really active pre-schoolers (little fast gear motor machines!) in a busy restaurant. DS1 and DDIL were busy wanting to chat with us, so my head was spinning.....especially after an empty kid plate went flying off the table, crashing on the floor. I almost died! Fortunately no one was hurt....including the people at nearby tables! The staff took a nano second to clear the broken pieces, so I guess they were not as shocked as I. Yikes! I barely recall what I ate, but it was some not very good fish in tomato sauce.

We arrived home and the kids (who have not been to our house for over a year, a large percentage of their young lives) immediately enjoyed exploring every nook and cranny! Our house must be like Arsenic and Old Lace to them since it is pretty traditional and theirs is ultra modern. So there was lots for them to explore! After they left, we kept finding little items in odd places. ;)

Sunday, we had a plan to eat at Legal Seafood Longwharf. After breakfast and backyard ball play, chalk writing on the flagstone, and balsa wood airplane flying, we piled into DS1's Tesla, headed into Boston and pursued our first task to find a charging station. Fortunately, a hotel parking garage near our destination had an open charging spot. Not sure I would be so good at this electric car management thing. This is the first time they took a long trip in it....with the kids! So we left the car and walked to Long Wharf. It was a GORGEOUS DAY! We walked (and ran as the kids sped up!) along the waterfront and throughout Quincy Market all afternoon, after lunch. It was great fun!!

So Legal Seafood was smarter than Bertucci's when they saw us coming. Popped us into a giant booth with tall sides....sort of like a family playpen. Perfect! I was able to relax a bit and enjoy our meal. I'll post a pic of the playpen arrangement. My scallops with asparagus and couscous was delicious. I learned that both DS1 and DDIL are now fully vegetarian.....so they had a rice/veggie dish each. DH had a fish stew. The kids had fish....I'm glad that they do not have to be vegetarians too, yet. They have always been fed very healthy adult food.

After our relatively "uneventful" lunch, (phew!) we headed out to explore the happenings on the waterfront and it was lively and fun. The kids had room to move and little DGD found a zillion structures that she could turn into gym equipment. She is a darling force and really needs to get into a gymnastics class. Her brother (4) is adorably protective of her in public and always holds her hand....amazingly she complies. We rode the nearby carousel, watched street performers, enjoyed some frozen yogurt at Quincy Market and DGD was in heaven chasing birds there. I was the hawk watching her since she is way too friendly and curious at 2 1/2 and would follow anything that looked interesting. I saw a man taking pix of random kids when we were watching the seals play, and he stopped when he noticed me look at him...in time for him NOT to get a shot of my grands. Then he put his phone in his pocket and walked off. I may be too jaded, but it scared me!

We headed home after our waterfront fun, had some snacks, played in the backyard, they packed up, and off they went! It was a packed 23 hours!! I am so happy they came. Our visits go so much better when they include just us. Once the entire grandparent set is around it is chaos. So this worked out perfectly for everyone.....DDIL's parents got to spend the weekend in NYC which they love. All good!

Sunday night, DH and I collapsed! Happy and exhausted. Must admit, we are old! Feeling the seventy years I turn next month!

Monday AM I had my last allergy testing....Fall....yikes! Allergic to everything and my arm was swollen for days. Stretching class that afternoon was a stretch!!

Tuesday had my appt for getting my new orthotic at my old PT place. Sadly I learned that my PT guy is moving to another facility closer to his home. Since I'm sure I will be needing those services again someday given my joint issues, I was sad to learn that. But the clinic is a good one and I like the other therapists there, so it will be fine.

After orthotic pick up,I had my mammogram appt. Which took forever and I was the last person there. All's well that ends well. I think I already wrote that we went to Juniper that night. I was spent!

Wed I crashed for the day and rallied just enough to marinate salmon and asparagus for dinner. DH grilled them.

Thursday I shopped at my favorite Frugal Fannie's for summer casual clothes, then met my old office mate for dinner at Not Your Avg Joes and had scallops on a rosemary skewer. Lots of seafood this week.

Yesterday after my yearly derm appt., spent a long time at the gym so I could rationalize making and enjoying veggie pizza for dinner. I was actually dying to cook!

Since I stopped at WF for veggies, I picked up their pizza dough to make things quicker. Definitely prefer my own dough! But the toppings were great...red onion, garlic, red peppers, zucchini, mushrooms, chopped sun dried tomatoes, and......ta da....sauteed kale! Hope I didn't ruin the image with that! ;) Totally delish! Made a quick romaine, red onion, and grape tomato salad with balsamic to go with the pizza.

Tonight we are going out again...dinner with friends before the local concert. Going to a sushi restaurant that DH assures me will have sonething I can order. I got very sick after my first foray into sushi, so like to avoid it. Since I've eaten well all week, I can survive fine with whatever they offer non sushi eaters!

Sorry to take so much space......I'm picturing sleepy readers! ;)

    Pix next....

Carole, I also love to cook creole/cajun. Was recently in New Orleans for my 6th trip (DH's first) - made a trip down for our first wedding anniversary before I had the biopsy/Lx. Figured one last trip before possibly bad news.

I love the website southyourmouth.com . Great great recipes there and usually pretty easy.

Lacey - great pictures. Thanks for sharing. Oh doesn't Susan's first night in Istanbul sound magical. Nance - have fun at the BB game. Carole - good luck w/your hair washing project. I don't know if I've ever been to a beauty salon for just a wash, but I might succumb in your circumstances.

Bedo - we are all so excited about this wedding. Hope everything is going well.

I'm trying to decide what to do w/the leftover rotissarie chicken I froze last week. It will either be Rao's marinara with artichoke hearts added & maybe black olives on some kind of pasta or Green Chili stew w/black beans added on rice. Just haven't made up my mind what my taste buds are telling me for today - other than watermelon for lunch.

We spent the day learning the metro system, going to Sultanahmet where we toured the Blue Mosque and went to the Museum of Turkish and Islamic art.

Tonight we headed out planning to get Borak at the Borak Master. Well, either they had their shutters down so that the sign was invisible, or they no longer exist. Adjustments were made and we bought two shwarma wraps from a place that browns the meat well on the upright rotisserie. Then to the baklava store and back to the apartment to have an indoor picnic. [This is a country that consumes HUGE amounts of vegetables. Where are they?]

Pictures of the Mosque, which is stunning, and the baklava, also stunning! And a picture of the view from our balcony. It looks grayer than real life, but it is the best I could do.

Lacey, enjoyed the recap of Mother's Day visit. Adorable children. Good thing for parents to be young.

Tempy, will have to visit that web site. Would love to sample your gnocchi.

Travel envy after seeing Susan's photos and reading post.

Would use Rao more often if price wasn't so high
