Lol Sandy - “extreme regularity" - I like that. My penicillin allergy manifested itself after a ruptured appendix resulted in my receiving massive doses. Subsequent tests showed sensitivity to ampicillin as well but curiously, not amoxicillin. I haven’t been tested in 15 years so who knows if I’m still sensitive.

Tonight was bratwurst, fried potatoes and cole slaw.

Today I bought some Dot’s cheese curls, which are new to this area. I may have made a terrible mistake

Nance - I bought some Dot's Cheese Curls a week ago. They are OK - but if I'm going to invest in the calories and the sodium, (not to mention the cost) I'd just as soon have regular old Cheetos.

I like the regular Cheetos a lot but do not buy them because of the salt. During the summer in MN, there is often a bag of open Cheetos at happy hour over on Mary and Lyman's deck and I do dip my hand into the bag. Salt is not my friend. The main reason I did not cook corned beef on St. Patrick's Day and hardly ever cook ham.

Last night's chili made with ground beef and pinto beans cooked separately was blah. I'm not sure why but will add more chili powder when we have it again. We spooned it over large elbow pasta and had a good side salad with romaine and additions.

DH is cooking tonight. He bought Italian sausage yesterday and indicated he will re-create a Hello Fresh meal he prepared.

Dinner was a lovely charcuterie board - no meat but 3 kinds of cheese and 5 or 6 vegetables with some fig/rosemary crisps. Great with a glass of San Gregorio single vineyard Las Martas Garnasha while I was watching a virtual organ concert for Bach's 336th birthday. Excellent wine for right around $10. Great concert. My favorites were "Sleepers Awake" and the "Toccata in F Major" (the one playing in the movie Phaedra when Tony Perkins went around the bend - figuratively & literally).

Dinner tonight was easy--rotisserie chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, and broccoli cuts with cheese sauce. I had a busy morning and afternoon and knew an afternoon nap would happen. So i preemptively asked DH to pick up dinner at the market. He happily obliged.

Minus charcuterie board and concert sounded terrific.

Carol my husband has to watch his salt too although the above dinner choice doesn't really reflect that. 😉 why I don't send him alone to pick out dinner too much.

Carol, your mention of chili caught my attention so dinner was chili with corn served over cornbread. Unlike you, I got mine very spicy--perhaps we should meet half way and exchange half of yours for half of mine? 😉

Dunch was crab cakes, DH had a shrimp cocktail and I had a wonderful crab topped Mac n cheese at Katie’s seafood house in Galveston.

Dinner tonight was ribeyes cooked in a cast iron pan, baked potatoes with butter and sour cream - naughty, and steamed green beans with dill and lemon pepper. DH worked on the new gravel driveway at DD's all day so was happy to see red meat for dinner! I spent some time trying to understand and operate my newly installed microwave. It does a bunch of things and comes with special pans and crispers/steamers, and is also a convection oven, so kind of like getting a regular wall oven and a slightly smaller oven too. I found the manual not particularly useful and at one point it was speaking French after I pushed the wrong button in the language set up. My college French was not adequate to understand what the microwave was telling me, and I finally got back to English. I was tempted to ask Google for some bad words in French, but I refrained. Then I got stuck in demo mode but finally got out of that and actually cooked the potatoes for dinner - victory! Or should I say, la victoire!

My only oven during the summer in MN (other than the outdoor gas grill) is a combo microwave/convection oven.

Dinner prepared by dh last night was very good. A Hello Fresh dish, Italian sausage and pasta with a creamy sauce.

Tonight will be a choice between dinner at nearby Five Girls restaurant or leftover chili. When I think ahead to going out to eat, it seems a good idea but most of the time I prefer staying at home. Age related?

I will try to force myself to go outside during the am hours and do some much-needed weed removal. After today we are supposed to be in for days with rain.

I haven't been to Katie's in Galveston either, but it looks delicious. I am so looking forward to seeing the ocean again. Almost any ocean at this point.

Tried a new recipe today for Caramelized Mushroom Pasta with vegetable stock & heavy cream. The flavor was excellent & I will make it again with some changes. I used angel hair pasta (the author recommended spaghetti), but I'll try something shorter & more compact next time (maybe gemelli). And I'll double the quantity of mushrooms to pasta. Can you tell I like mushrooms?

For anyone thinking of trying Katie’s, here’s a more thorough review.
The cocktails were tasty but pricy, my rum drink was delicious but at $12, two was my limit. DH has the Bloody Mary adorned with snacks, it was $25, just one for him.

The crab cakes were good but best is Mr. B’s in NOLA so far, Katie’s ranked 5th place for me. The shrimp cocktail was pretty good according to DH but Mambo (several locations in HOU) is his favorite, hands down, and he’s had many across the US. But the Mac n cheese was worth the trip for sure, it’s ranks top or 2nd for both of us.

Knowing what I do now, if have the pelican punch rum drink, the Mac n cheese and I’d try the fish (not fried), which is caught each morning and sold in their little market next door and served in the restaurant.

auntie - Kitchenaid is marketed in both the US and Canada, so it has both languages and asks you to make a choice. I somehow said yes (oui) to French, which ended up in un probleme. I definitely didn't learn any microwave related words in the years of French I took, hell, there weren't even microwaves back then, lol! Makes me wonder if Bosch appliances can speak German?

Last night was chili mac and cheese. It was so-o-o good. And there is so-o-o much left over. The side was a romaine salad with bottled Caesar dressing, much to my taste.

Our weather forecast is full of ominous warnings for today through Thursday. It looks ominous outside. I wish I were a daytime napping person because I did not have a whole night of restful sleep last night. The loud chiming of my wonderful Windsor wind chimes didn't help.

Not sure about tonight's menu.

beaver - so far the Kitchenaid dishwasher is the only one of the appliances that required no set-up, so mine hasn't said anything either, lol! The language below each button is English on the front. I haven't used the oven yet, but it has the shared control panel and digital screen with the microwave as it is a one unit built in wall situation. I am hoping that since I have the language set for the microwave the oven won't spontaneously speak French when I use it for the first time. These appliances are far more complicated than any I have had previously and I am finding it a bit challenging even in English!

On a not so great front - it appears that I have a case of shingles. I am suspicious that it is due to my vaccine a week ago, this is a pattern with cold sores for me when I get sick with any other virus, or my system is stressed in any way - like a sunburn, windburn, freezing temps, too much stress, etc., and I am amazed that a cold sore did not happen with this. The rash is on the opposite shoulder from my vaccine, and I initially thought something bit me or it was a contact thing. It is on my worse lymphedema arm and I can feel the tightness happening down the inner bicep. Roughly between the shoulders, slightly closer to the vaccine side, I have a four inch incision that still has stitches in it from a wide excision skin cancer removal. Those stitches come out Friday, with another surgery happening about two inches to the left on that day. I have anti-viral meds from my viral induced hearing loss, and I started taking them last night - and the area is itching and burning less. As long as it doesn't get too crazy I will just have my MOHS surgeon/derm look at it then. Bleh.

It’s a dark rainy day here. Carole’s chili sounds good. I voiced the possibility to DH who heartily approved so I guess it’s chill tonight.

Shingles.....uggh. Hopefully the anti-viral stuff does the job.

One of our cars would do French, Spanish and English, but so far the appliances "do" only English.

I've been doing a lot of catching up on home maintenance stuff and the dinners have been taking 2nd place to getting all the work done. Dinners have not been the most inspiring. :-)

We did make a braised chicken recipe with rice and it was one of those "Next time try...." results. The chicken was chalky dry, so I'm guessing we overcooked it. Normally we use a dutch oven in a regular oven, but this time we decided to use the crockpot. Our (very old and ugly) oven will regulate temperatures down to around 140F degrees. I checked the crockpot, unfortunately only after the overcooking, and found it keeps temperatures around 190F degrees. Oops.. :-)

Thanks to ideas from folks on here, tonight was pasta (small ridged tubes made with rice and white and red quinoa), homemade cheese sauce with multiple cheeses and leftover chili--kinda sorta mac and cheese. The pasta and cheese sauce cooled down the too hotly spiced chili just fine!

Special, for what it's worth, a neighbor got the Moderna vaccine eight days ago and, today, was diagnosed with shingles.

Will the anti-viral meds reduce the Covid vaccine effectiveness?

eric - it doesn’t appear from what I have looked at that this anti-viral will interfere. The caution seems to be linked more to anti-inflammatory meds and steroids with the vaccine. I’m glad I will be able to speak to my derm on Fri morning - I can always discontinue the med in plenty of time before my second vaccine. Interesting about the similar timing with your neighbor. I am wondering if this is confirmation that my immune system is not particularly strong, and has been part of my decision to isolate for the past year for the most part.

Had celery & carrots in the fridge that really needed to be used. I cooked Anasazi beans and added both, in addition to onion & garlic. No meat but very delicious.

Saw my pulmonologist today. He told me 3 important things that are vital to good health as we age: walking, pasta and wine. I was really surprised by the pasta, but I won't argue with any of those.

DH cooked a stir fry last night with the rest of the pork tenderloin and various veggies. He was supposed to use cabbage but left it out. My sister brought two huge cabbages someone had given her.

I've had the chance to be a 6 year old boy again. The lawn sprinkler piping was leaking in a couple of spots and to repair the leaks, I had to dig in the muddy lawn. It's 70F/21C and comfortable to be bare footed, wearing old clothes AND "PLAYING" IN THE MUD.

Dinner tonight will likely be some fish tacos.

No planned dinner tonight, so I made a box of Annie’s white cheddar shells and cheese with a side salad, it was pretty good. DH was making some Italian sausage, so I had two small meatballs as an after dinner snack.

I recently found out Ninja foodi is wonderful thing. I make egg bites, beef jerkys, rib roast, ham and more. My food motivated beagle dog gets excited any time I turn the machine on. After dinner, I decided to cook multi grain rice in it. She got super excited I felt sorry that I inadvertently punked her.
