    To get the oil infused

Well, i do get little bottles of truffle oil that have tiny pieces of truffle in them. Same thing with basil-infused olive oil. And that little "Truffle Pig" brand jar of black truffle pieces is packed in olive oil. So it may be that it's the wild truffles that haven't been rinsed and refrigerated that might be toxic. What I did hear was that any homemade herb-infused oils must either be immediately used or refrigerated and used up fairly quickly, or otherwise have been pasteurized (as many commercial oils are) or have the herbs filtered out before bottling. The concern is botulism.

Bob's clinic closed an hour early after reports that a currency exchange cater-corner from it had been hit. He got the heck out of there quickly, but reports that all he saw all the way home (9 miles) were some boarded-up stores (mostly pharmacies, phone & shoe stores & groceries) but no evidence that they had been looted. Nothing in my neighborhood was looted (at least not as of now), but Whole Foods boarded up its windows and closed at 4 pm today as a precaution. The phone store and antique mall were closed but not boarded up; Walgreens's & CVS were open & intact (but teeming with security guards, at least one carrying a taser). There is a large protest march (masked and social-distanced) headed south to the river (bridges are up). But it is peaceful. (Were I not at elevated risk due to age and asthma, I might have marched part of the way. But I'm not leaving my home & yard except for prescriptions I can't get delivered and appointments).

It is heartbreaking to hear from senior citizens on the S. and W. Sides who can't get their prescriptions. The city is working with the pharmacies' corporate offices to get those prescriptions express-mailed out postage-free should customers request it.

I've been eating rotisserie chicken breast sandwiches on Hawaiian rolls for the lasts couple of days. YUM. Accompanied by a salad one day and by chocolate pudding the next day. Last night I polished off 1/2 a bag (oops - party size) of Ruffles w/Ridges. Well, I had to eat the last of the Hidden Valley Ranch Dip (w/sour cream) before it went bad. Sigh - I know, I could have used carrot sticks & cucumber slices, but...

Tonight will be zucchini 'zoodles' with meat sauce & mushrooms. I defrosted some of the sauce I bought & packaged before my favorite restaurant closed for good (two weeks before any hint of a shut down). May have to pair with Hawaiian rolls w/garlic butter.

Had a delicious rice last weekend. 7 Grain & Lentil Blend from Whole Foods. Perfect for two, or two meals for one.

Nance - did you "pass" inspections? Have you selected a place to move to? Lacey - did you get to the 1st BD party? Eric - hope the dentist visit was minor & your Grand Canyon journey is happening. What are you working on up there? Special - can you believe we're into hurricane season already?

minus - I know, right? Hoping we have no hurricanes, I’m too tired... in mid-construction at DD’s house. New floor is down in the office, the beam (the one holding up the house) is not termite ridden - yay! - and can be clad in stained pine without being replaced. Water heater is now moved outside of the house, but not before the main shut off at the street seized and had to be replaced. Three different visits today from the City of Tampa utilities, all super polite and helpful, made a stressful situation easier because they were so nice. This phase of fixing should all be finished by end of week, but then have to deal with removing a 100 year old massive oak tree in the front yard damaged by the termites - thank goodness we have a friend in the tree removal business who is offering us a “friends and family” price, and replacing the windows - before there is a hurricane, lol! Window corners are pretty “porous” as they are original crank windows and this is an old house. Will install impact resistant ones - that combined with the cinder block exterior that has stood since 1957 should finish things for a while here. During this we had to replace our water heater, install an emergency shut off valve, and we resurfaced our 15,000 gallon pool at our house. I need a nap... Hoping things are pracefulhere over the weekend, there are a number of demonstrations planned. We had rioting, looting, and fires between our house and DD’s on Saturday, we are 14 miles apart.

Well, whatever's for dinner tonight isn't coming out or going into the kitchen fridge--it's dying (and the icemaker is dead). 2-yr-old LG, top-rated by Consumer Reports. Had the presence of mind to buy the extended warranty (its predecessor lasted only 7 yrs) this time. Repair guy coming tomorrow; hopefully, it'll just need a reset of its little computer "brain" (we never hooked it up to wi-fi)--because the motor is running, it might not be the compressor. We moved as much out of the fridge as was safe last night and put it in the barebones basement fridge, and have a dozen ice cubes almost ready to rock.

Unless Bob gets home early enough to dine on Cellars' patio (and it doesn't rain), I'll probably nuke some pouches of vegetarian Indian food.

Wow! Special, I'm exhausted just reading your post! All that work and to know that you have a weather related deadline! Yikes! Hope you are taking several naps! Isn't it amazing to learn prices of tree removal! In our area, taking down a mature hardwood tree is in the thousands. In our NH neighborhood, the high hundreds. I now look at DS2s new “mature" property and hope his trees are healthy! As it is, they seem to be deciding to try to get the old bathrooms and dated kitchen (but perfectly functional, imho!) updated sooner rather than wait. Hope they understand what chaos they are in for, in addition to expense!
I think you've earned your general contractor badge, Special!

So we did break our quarantine,(not even mask wearing since we've all been so careful for almost three months: hope it wasn't foolhardy)and brought Chinese dinner to DS2's on Sunday to celebrate baby Amelia's 1st birthday. It was a bit weird to be driving in traffic that was heading to march in Boston, while going to reunite with our grand. But this whole period in our lives is weird!
It broke my heart when she first saw us up close and started to cry and grabbed her mom's neck. But a moment later, she warmed right up to me and resumed the wonderful playful interactions we always shared. In the last three months, she has moved from a baby to a busy toddler, so we delighted in her new activities. She seemed to enjoy our intimate birthday “celebration", (reconnectIng with her “court jesters", which we are:) and had an extended family Zoom Birthday a few hours earlier. That could have been an SNL skit!

DDIL2 is great with design sets, so for the Zoom, she dressed her in a watermelon dress and decorated her highchair with that theme. The meaning, which I didn't realize for a while, alluded to A's large bald “melon" head which she inherits from her dad. :) Hopefully, as hair finally grows in she will lose that distinction! :)

Here are a few BD pictures:

    imageimage
Oblivious to the Zoom birthday song Busy playing take and share, with a tiny piece of gift tissue

    imageimage

Above is preview pic DDIL2 sent of A. romping around in her Zoom birthday dress. Ha Ha! Not sure how the Minnie bow fits in! Last pic, A. looking for another cupcake. Didn't get it!

I was glad to have these images to look at after watching the broadcast all night of the understandable unrest in our country. I'm glad you all sound safe despite some being not far from the scary outbreaks and destruction after the peaceful demonstrations. I hope Carole will have the opportunity to check in to let us know how she is doing as their trip progresses.

Last night, we had sautéed chicken breasts over a medley of balsamic sautéed vegetables (Including my fave kale) and a sprinkling of chopped dried fruit on top. Sides were salad and baked sweet potatoes.

    image
    Okay....enough with the pix!
    Leftovers tonight.
Somehow, during the entire Covid homebound time, I have never baked! I now have some overripe bananas which might become scones, (Thank you, NYT) and some peaches which will become peach crisp, soon.

Stay safe in every way, all.

Lacey - thanks for sharing the pictures. Such a cutie.

A friend passed along a recipe her family has made twice now & loves. Korean Grilled Chicken Breasts (from Skinnytaste). She marinates the chicken 24 hrs. I'll be trying that, but in the oven instead of a grill. Or maybe even with a stir fry.

And I've found a recipe from Southern Living that I want to try for Skillet Shrimp - One-pan shrimp Destin with Orzo. Looks easy and 'fresh' with lemon zest, scallions, garlic and dill.

Oh Lacey, she is a cutie! So glad you got to visit.

Haven’t heard any inspection reports yet. Our buyer is in Texas and his realtor is here so that may slow things down a bit. Tomorrow we’re going to look at some short term leasing large apartments that sound ideal.

Tonight was the aforementioned pasta primavera and garlic bread

What a cutie-pie, Lacey--so great you got to visit!

We went to Cellars and ate on its patio--Bob had the blue cheese meatloaf and I had the salmon Caesar. (Brought home leftovers, but enough room for them in the basement fridge). Kitchen fridge definitely dead, though the stuff in its freezer is still solid.

We're hoping to eat brunch with Gordy & Leslie this Sunday if he has the day off.

Crazy eating today. A hard boiled egg after my walk. Then a slice of lemon loaf cake to celebrate my niece's b-day long distance. Two Hawaiian sweet rolls with the last of the rotisserie chicken breast for lunch. Dinner was supposed to be a responsible spinach salad. Instead it was Ruffles w/Ridges to finish off the sour cream ranch dip and then a bowl of macaroni with butter. Followed by 1/2 a cup of Hagen Daas Dulce de Leche ice cream and finally a gin & tonic while I visited with a friend. Oh well, tomorrow is another day.

Enjoyed all the pictures. What a cute little girl!

Nance, I was driving when we passed through your town. I thought about you and your dh. I feel a little sad for you as you leave your house which I'm sure is quite lovely.

Our trip went well. The two motels weren't crowded and the traffic wasn't heavy in the cities we passed through, including Minneapolis. We arrived at Pine Hollow yesterday, early afternoon. Last night we slept with windows open and had to pull up a blanket before morning. It was 60 degrees this morning.

I have discovered only one puzzling evidence of what I assume is mouse destruction. The folded quilt comforter up on a shelf in the closet was shredded in an area of about 8 inches square and the stuffing pulled out. But there was no mouse poop anywhere to be seen. Very mysterious. I haven't seen any sign of mouse occupancy anywhere else. I always put out lots of sheets of Bounce and other anti-mouse kits. I regret the ruin of the comforter because it was pricey and very pretty.

Today I will continue moving in, transferring stuff from cargo trailer to the 5th wheel camper, and also make a trip to town.

Dinner last night was broasted chicken from Clancy's restaurant and a side of cole slaw. The chicken was delicious. The coleslaw was edible.

DH's birthday is Monday the 8th. I made a dinner reservation at Boulders in Walker, about a 40 minute drive. It's a lovely, excellent restaurant and has a nice patio dining option.

Along the way on our trip we wore our masks when we ventured outside the truck. There were other people wearing masks, others not wearing them. It's spotty. Yesterday afternoon our neighbor Mary had quite a gathering of our resort neighbors on her deck. We did not join them. They were definitely not observing social distancing. So far there isn't a recorded case of Covid in this county, Hubbard. I don't know if there has been any testing either. But summer will be bringing in people from outside the county.

    No dinner menu for tonight.

    Lacey - Enjoyed your pics!

Carole - Please tell me more about using Bounce dryer sheets as mouse repellant. My DH uses traps & we find the occasional mouse in the garage, so believe we prevent them from coming indoors. Miss the days when one or the other of our 2 cats would quickly take care of any that made their way into the house. In re: your ruined quilt, perhaps donate to an animal shelter? Glad your relocation trip went smoothly.

MinusTwo - I have a great, easy recipe for Roasted Lemon Shrimp (use it for scallops also) - Please let me know if you would like it.

Sandy - OMG, so envious of all the great food/wine offerings you have nearby. When we lived in Muswell Hill (London suburb) we had terrific Fish-n-Chips, Indian, Chinese, Italian, etc. restaurants in easy walking distance. Also, a wonderful deli with delicious bagels & lox and potato salad. Alas, we are deep in the N KY suburbs of the greater Cincinnati area and while we are safe from looting, demonstrations etc., nothing much nearby except chains

DH & I are hoping that by the time our 30th anniversary rolls around on 6/30, we can venture out for a nice dining experience.

Glad to hear you made it safely up to MN, Carole--and that you are using common sense to stay safe.

So when it rains, it pours (figuratively as well): just as I was getting ready to sleep at 2am, the power suddenly went out. (Surprised because it wasn't hot out and we were running just one window A/C). Used my Apple Watch to find a flashlight so I could locate (and unplug) my cell and call ComEd: the outage was neighborhood-wide (affecting 3100 households); they had no idea why, and the estimated restore time was 4am. It came back on a bit after 3.

But when I got up this morning, and came downstairs, my HK declared "It's a miracle!" The fridge was cold again, the icemaker had dropped several loads of cubes, and the only stuff that spoiled was past pull date to begin with. Apparently, the outage and restoration "power-cycled" and re-booted the fridge, re-setting its software. The compressor won't be in till Tues., so I'll wait till Mon. to see if the fridge holds up before cancelling the return service appt. At least now I know what to try first the next time this happens: head downstairs and re-set the dedicated circuit breaker.

Breakfast was French-style soft-scrambled eggs (secret is to use a small nonstick saucepan rather than frypan), 2 slices of bacon, and a piece of low-carb toast. Now that I have lots of basil--and the half of a tomato in the fridge, might make a cheeseless Caprese (didn't try to move the mozz. downstairs so we had to toss it). Not sure what to do for dinner--if it's nice out, we'll either grill a steak or head over to Cellars' patio again. (Or carry out from Patio fast-food Greek joint around the corner, likely Greek salad and gyros platter).

EDITED TO ADD: And now, because we didn't use the garage overnight (the power line shorted out in yesterday's downpour, and when it came back on we didn't want to chance our cars being trapped in there should it storm again), rats have moved in on my car's side--my HK, when she went to reset the GFCI after last night's neighborhood-wide outage, the light came on and she saw the pellets. We have a slight dent in the back wall from when I overshot a few years ago, which caused a big gap at the bottom--that's where they moved in overnight. I called the exterminator, and he's sending someone out Monday (earliest he could do because this is a problem all over the city). He says it's not a given they'll be back if I re-park, but he can't guarantee that my car's return would scare them away either. So I can either risk having them get into the engine and gnaw the wires (carmakers now use soy-based insulation), or stay parked on the street and risk either their returning tonight or having my catalytic converter stolen. I took a look, and the pellets are new. So I did park--but left the overhead light on to discourage critters (and also monitor whether there's another short in the garage power line).

Roasted Lemon Shrimp: 2 TBSP Unsalted Butter, melted (I use salted & omit salt listed later in recipe) / 1 TBSP fresh lemon juice / 2 cloves garlic, minced / 1/8 TSP red pepper flakes (I omit these due to digestive issues) / 8 - 12 oz uncooked shrimp (I use wild caught, with tails off) / salt to taste / fresh ground pepper to taste. 400 degree oven. Mix first 4 ingredients. Pat shrimp dry. Season w/salt & pepper. Toss shrimp in mixed ingredients. Roast 10-12 minutes. I use parchment paper in the pan used for roasting for easy cleanup. There will be some sauce in the pan that you can pour over shrimps, if you like.

I've been reading, but not posting...been kind of busy with all sorts of stuff.

So sad, Chi. The COVID is a strange thing. I'm not sure what else to say and it seems strange to just "plunge" on with the post.

The GFCI tripping. If it becomes a huge problem and the electrician says it's "just the way it is" because the electrical code requires garage outlets to have GFCI protection (which by the way, I think is a good thing)....ask the electrician if the "problem" GFCI breaker can be replaced with a regular breaker and GFCI outlet(s) be installed in the garage. Now, if you have what are AFCI breaker, which many cities mandate being used in new construction...put "AFCI nuisance trip" into your favorite search engine.

Minus, I haven't been out exercising the past few days. The governor ordered a statewide 8pm curfew because of the protests turning violent. I did run the other night, starting at 7pm. When I got home, just before 8pm, it had cooled to almost 105F/40C...I was so sweaty that even my shoes "squished". :-( Hopefully the order isn't extended and I can get back to running after dark. I'd go to the gym, but I'm not sure how great that would be...heavy exercise and wearing a mask isn't very compatible. I've had to work while wearing a N95 and the mask greatly reduces my ability to exert myself without getting out of breath.

Lacey, those are sweet picture of Amelia. I needed the smile. :-)

Celia - thanks for the recipe. I've printed it out.

Chi - sorry about the death of your doc.

Eric - did you go to the Grand Canyon? Interesting someone was just talking about AFCI being the new standard the other day. Speaking of junk calls, the lack of calls the last couple of weeks has been delightful. Now they've started up again.

Too hot to eat after walking. So I stayed out & worked in the yard for another couple of hours trying to pull out Johnson grass by hand. Only 95, but full sun at noon is a bitch. Stupid! So breakfast, lunch & dinner was zucchini noodles and spaghetti sauce with ground meat from the freezer. Side was two Hawaiian rolls. Dessert was one slice of lemon loaf cake.

Nothing for breakfast except black coffee--late last night my disposer seized up and the half of the kitchen sink containing it was backed up with suspiciously starchy "greige" water. My suspicions were correct: the leftover 5-day-old Chinese white & brown rices--which had hardened into bricks that I broke up and seemingly successfully ran through the disposer, got stuck in the "trap" of the U-pipe. So I had to wait for the plumber to replace the disposer and pipe--both of which had long ago exceeded their lifespans and begun to corrode.

Lunch, brought home from WF by Bob, was Southwestern turkey breast, broccoli, and kale slaw. Dinner was more of the same, plus Middle Eastern leftovers from last night: kefta, yogurt-marinated chicken kabob, Greek salad with tahini dressing. Lots of yellow rice--tempting, but I left that for Bob.

Tomorrow we are going to brunch at Cellars' patio. Last night, Gordy took Leslie there for her 30th birthday. I will likely grill a steak or burgers for dinner: one more day of cool-to-mild sunny weather. Wearing long PJs (scrubs) and down comforter for sleep, rather than turn the heat back on.

Carole, thanks for checking in. It’s good to know that you have arrived safely and started your summer! Tho I can see how it would be disconcerting to see people’s relaxed attitudes about gathering without masks and distancing. I guess some people just do not believe in the dangers of the virus, and others even believe it’s a Demo hoax. Maybe living in a dream world works for some....until it doesn’t!

Chi, I am so sorry to learn about the death of your primary care physician. That’s jarring...and so sad.
I am jarred enough learning that my annual PE, which I was saving concerns up for, is scheduled to be a telemed appt now. Our state has been moving along with progressive phasing back to work, etc., so I thought by the 16th, I’d have an office visit.
And the kicker is that DH has his on the same day and he is going to have an office visit with his doc. I guess in gray area times like this it’s better to have a concierge doc, which he has. I was resistant to shifting to his practice since I’ve been with my doc for many years, but that may not have been such a smart decision, especially since this concierge practice was not an arm and a leg to join. Oh well. At this point, I am just hoping my doc is okay.

Chi, I’m also sorry to learn that you are dealing with so many unexpected house issues that require immediate attention. Ugh! Hope they resolve.

Minus, I chuckled at your description of it being “only 95”. Not sure I’d do well with that and walking! And Eric...here’s hoping your gov lifts the curfew soon!

Celia, your recipe for the lemon shrimp looks good. Sadly, I saw it too late last night to use on some dry scallops that DH (the newly minted happy shopper!) picked up on sale. They were smaller than our usual sea scallops, but very tasty. I decided to sauté them “naked” with just some evoo and a bit of butter once I turned them over. I really wanted to see how tasty they were by themselves, and they didn’t disappoint. I will try your recipe with the frozen shrimp that await attention.

For sides last night, I made roasted asparagus with garlic, lemon and a sprinkle of parmesan, and made a simple salad with a balsamic dressing and added some pear chunks. Wishing DH had gotten more scallops to freeze and have for another meal. This one felt special since we rarely have scallops, which run almost $20 lb. These were fresh, dry and half that!
We had a few leftover so for tonight’s “barely mention worthy” dinner, we had those for some “interest”, along with Allessi’s sicilian lentil soup, and a salad. The best part of tonight’s meal was some sour dough bread with mashed avocado flavored with roasted garlic. Pic is from last night...and it is all darker than reality. :

Outdoor brunch at Cellars today was broccoli-cheddar quiche (so light, tall & fluffy it's essentially a souffle in a pie crust) and field greens salad with balsamic vinaigrette. Tonight, since the curfew has been lifted, we plan on going back to Moody's Pub just n. of it, for burgers in their beer garden. (I plan on having mine with everything...except the bun). If we can't get a reservation, we'll grill our own.

Last night, went to Moody's Pub--which has not one but three outdoor beer gardens, and at 8pm was about 2/3 full. They ran out of beef burgers (only veggie was left), so we ordered steak sandwiches. Meh. The fresh-cut fries were great--against my better judgment I ate about 10 of them; the sauteed onions atop the steak were delish too. But the steak was tough. Spurned the bun, of course. Tonight, my leftover steak and a salad I'll throw together--will save the leftover fries to crisp up in the SmartOvenAir should Bob want to snack on them tonight when he gets home.

Today is DH's 81st birthday. We have a reservation for patio dining at the Boulders in Walker. It's quite an elegant restaurant for this area and DH likes it a lot. The food is good and the cocktails are even better. Walker is about a 45 minute drive and there's a certain peril to driving after dark because of the deer population.

I have used a recipe for cooking shrimp in the oven very similar to that one. Instead of pepper flakes the recipe called for a generous sprinkle of Louisiana hot sauce. The shrimp are peeled, not in their shells. Good hot French bread is necessary for sopping up the lemony garlicky butter sauce!

Carole - Happy B-day to your DH. Looking forward to hearing about your fancy dinner.

Together - I like the idea of the combo of jalapeno cream cheese & pepper jack.

Today's meal was a large salad w/a couple of hard boiled eggs added - and cucumber, avocado. carrots & tomatoes. Too hot to eat much at 97 degrees. At 8:30pm it was still 94 when I went out to water the tomatoes and cut off dead roses. I was wringing wet in just that short time. Tomorrow is supposed to be 99 with a heat index of 113. I will be walking early and likely not eating much again.

Tonight was foil-packet baked Scottish Salmon. Drizzled with olive oil then heaped up with lemon slices and dill, basil, chives and parsley from our pots on the deck. Served with leftover deli salads from Harris Teeter an, as an afterthought, caprese salad.

Maryland gets so little "no humidity" summer evenings so dining on the deck tonight was required. Lovely.
