I dreamed about baking the potatoes for twice baked potatoes last night. This morning I will make my dream reality and also make horseradish sauce and jus base to go with tonight's beef rib roast, which is (I hope) in the outside refrigerator. We don't keep that building locked. Wouldn't it be a shocker if I went out to get the roast and it was gone.

The menu tonight will be medium rare prime rib roast with jus and horseradish sauce, twice baked potatoes and a salad with romaine, pear, dried cranberries and walnuts. DH bought an 8 lb. roast so there should be a lot of leftover beef. Our friends will save a lot of $$$ by not going out to a restaurant but we won't.

Celia, the food experiences on your NYC trip sound wonderful. Glad you had such a great time.

Pouring rain tonight--gonna be a messy walk to & from Cellars tonight, where 9 of us will be dining and then come back here for baklava, cookies, chips & bubbly. Glad that I managed to reach the shoe store just before they closed, and got some plain waterproof nylon boots that don't look like I'm primed to hike up a glacier. (Not enough time to spray my UGGs and have them dry--the fumes wouldn't be a good idea anyway).

Guitar party Sat. aft. had great food: potstickers, mini-quiches, spanakopita, cookies and a slow-BBQed pork shoulder that was utterly wonderful. En route there (in Palatine) I saw a place called "Mother Clucker's," with a slogan in the window: "We always give you the bird." Well, how could I pass that up on the way home? Very good broasted chicken, mac & cheese and greens. Had the leftovers last night.

Tonight is chili with cornbread and coleslaw. For dessert, we are still working on the baked goods from our Christmas dinner and the party the next day!

Dinner has been sporadic over the last week - too many instances of eating a late lunch and then not eating dinner. Attended the last Buc's game yesterday, last second loss to the Atlanta Falcons, and we ate at the stadium. Dinner tonight was cheese and spinach ravioli with marinara and freshly grated parm, Brussels sprouts on the side with bacon, onion, and balsamic glaze.

chisandy - the baked bris comment made me laugh, as did the Amateur Drunk Night one!

auntie - lol on the autocorrect! Didn't know you could disable it. I do know on my phone that prosciutto autocorrects to prostitute...

bedo - glad I caught the photo of you and DGS in your matching jammies!

Like Specialk, I had a late lunch of chicken salad with broccoli sprouts in a wheat pita. Dinner ended up being a small cup of black eyed peas and fruit salad overflow (about 1 1/2 cups wouldn’t fit in the container I used).

Oh my....some beautiful descriptions of delicious sounding meals and mouthwatering pix. Thanks!

Celia, what a wonderful trip to NYC you described. Glad you enjoyed that with your children! Reminded me of our years of visits to DS1 and DDIL1 when they were studying in Manhattan, living near Lincoln Center. Fun memories!

Lovely photo, Beto! Hope you get your heat issue resolved! Cute grandson!

So to back track....we spent Christmas Eve next door with a fun group of their friends and my sister. After the Yankee Swap, they served a wonderful sit down meal of marinated grilled lamb chops, veggies, cheesey potatoes, my salads, and a variety of desserts...cookies, bars, parfaits. It was a lot of fun.

On Christmas morning DS2 and DDIL2 came for a late morning gnosh which included fruit salad, maple laced yogurt, and a ton of cookie selections (made mainly by my sister and next door neighbor who had already escaped to FL). I delighted in offering cookies for a meal! ;) Then we did a speed gift opening session before rushing to another friends' home where DH was to assemble his paella dishes for the Christmas dinner. Worked out well. Pictured below:

    image

Only to be outdone (in my opinion because I've had this paella a lot) by the host's sister's tray of beautiful cookies:

    image

One of our best Christmas gifts was being released from our “gag order" about DS2 and DDIL's news that they are more successfully pregnant now. We learned about it at Thanksgiving, but were asked to keep it quiet until more tests. So far, a month later all is going well, other than extremely anxious expectant parents after their last experience. I'm hoping they can get reassured by the next set of tests and experience the joy of their life stage! Of course WE feel that a local granddaughter will be wonderful! Hoping all goes well.

    On to New Year's Eve....

DH and I decided to attend a comedy show in the town next door, but planfully arranged for a good pizza meal at home afterwards. We decided to research pizza places we have never tried, to see if we could find a new favorite (our local town favorite closed several years ago), and I think we did....and they deliver!! ;)

So I made one of my fave salads, and DH picked up a half-baked pizza before heading to the show. We finished baking it once home and had a great casual NYE dinner. A bottle of pinot grigio rounded out the meal. Never quite opened up the bubbly at midnight.

Wishing all of you a very happy and healthy 2019! I am so appreciative of this lovely group which I joined about a year after my surgeries

And Eric....a very belated Happy Birthday!

Sharon and I went over to her mother's place for New Year's Eve dinner. Manicotti, a really nice salad and rhubarb pie.

The fireworks (and the dogs) were exploding until around 4am. I, and Jessiecat, slept through it, while the two dogs were busy keeping scaring the fireworks noise out of the house..but Sharon was awake until around 4am.

Keeping the pregnancy news "under wraps" must have been difficult. :-) I'm glad things seem to be going well this time.

I'm going up to a store to see if I can find some "keep me warm while I'm running" clothes. It's been near freezing the past few days and when (poor baby, me) it gets below about 40F degrees, my hands get cold when I run.

Bob & I had a great Christmas in NYC a couple of years ago--but it's always better with friends & family!

Dinner at Cellars started with an amuse-bouche: a soup-spoon of preserved daikon, blue cheese and prosciutto. Appetizer was a "gravlax tower:" cubed house-made gravlax and avocado, topped with pickled red oinion. Entree was a honey-brined pork porterhouse with mashed sweet potatoes and glazed Brussels sprouts. Dessert was 2 mini-scoops ea. of pistachio and double dark chocolate gelato.

Had the leftover gravlax & fixings on a bagel with cream cheese, shallots & dill for brunch. Probably will reheat my leftover entree tonight, unless Bob wants to bring stuff home if he's working late (or choosing to watch the Rose Bowl in the doctors' lounge rather than on delay back here).

Wonderful news Lacey and the paella looks fabulous!

Late lunch today - a large fajita taco salad, so tonight is breakfast. I'm hoping the blackeyed peas will still work their magic tomorrow along with the oven fried chicken that was supposed to be tonight's dinner.

A very happy new year to you my friends!

Lacey - great to hear the news about DS1 and his bride.

A friend brought me some of her Mexican Black Eyed Pea casserole. Anytime I've made it, the dish empties quickly with lots of raves - so it was nice to have some for NY. Delicious. I did eat some coleslaw for prosperity. So much for my plans for the rest of the leftovers.

Nance - I think the 2nd will work at well as the 1st.

Eric - I had to laugh about you buying warmer clothes. I'm sitting in a sweat suit w/a turtleneck underneath and wool socks, the heat turned up to 73 degrees - and I'm freezing. Oh well, probably attributable to the UTI that got incorrect treatment starting Christmas Eve. The stupid lab reported "3 or more potential pathogens" but didn't continue to grow the culture to identify them. Hope the new sample I 'donated' on NY Eve cultures correctly.

I too wish everyone a Happy New Year.

lacey - yay for DS2 & DDIL! And you and your DH! Agree, paella looks fab!

Dinner tonight was reverse sear sirloins, white quinoa topped with sautéed yellow pepper, scallion and julienned carrot. Breakfast was a vegan protein shake with strawberries and blueberries, and a snack of hummus, rice chips, carrots and celery after a 6 mile walk. Feeling virtuous, but it prob won't last, lol! Heading for Hawaii on the 19th and bathing suit wearing is calling for desperate measures!

eric - our dog was doing what your dogs were last night - but we got some gunfire along with our fireworks - it is Florida after all...

Happy New Year to all my kitchen peeps!!! May 2019 bring only good things for all!

oh that all sounds great! We had our big group dinner on Saturday. Brunch with ham, sausage, bagels, waffles, hardboiled eggs, corn, rolls, apple pie, and, of course, my Christmas Wreath. Nothing fancy, but good.

New Years Eve, we did chili. Yeah, it was cold and wet, and turned to ice so we just snuggled up in the house. New Years day, leftover ham, green bean casserole, and a warm brie round in pastry that had to be eaten, cause I forgot to put it out. Topped it with 3 berry sauce I made from leftover fruit. LOL. Still have some ham left, but not too much. Using the bone to make bean soup, probably tomorrow, or the day after. Gotta make room in freezer first. LOL.

Hope 2019 is good to everyone. Happy New Year!

    Much love

Moon - how is your DH doing?

Special - oh I am jealous about Hawaii. Never mind what island, I still want to hide in your luggage. I was hoping I would get there in November, but it didn't happen. Now my young friends who have lived there 13 years are pulling up stakes and moving to Panama.

Yes we have indiscriminate firing of guns in Texas too. Absolutely scary. When did the tradition of fireworks on NY Eve start anyway? When I was a kid it was only on 4th of July. Or maybe it was always regional and has expanded?

As I posted on the de-cluttering thread, I cleaned out the cabinet that holds spices on NY Eve. I made hard boiled eggs & paprika was from 2007. I'm not one to toss things just because of a 'best by' date, but an opened spice for 11 years was probably ready to go. I no longer cook the same way I used to - either the type of dishes or quantity, so quite a few things got tossed. Nice to start the NY knowing what I have.

Oddly enough, considering that I live in Arizona, I didn't hear any gunfire last night...just fireworks..

Perhaps stupid people are getting smarter, but the pessimist in me says that is unlikely. So, maybe it just wasn't around here.

Hmmmm, Minus, glad you mentioned the decluttering thread....I must find it! I seriously am feeling ready to tackle this “filled to the brim” house.

Another envier of your Hawaii trip here, Special! And I know the bathing suit panic about which you speak! I am just heading to LA in a month and dread putting on shorts. Maybe it will be unseasonably cool there. Ha! Our trip is to visit my brother (a year older than I) who, sadly, is suffering/failing with Lewy Body Dementia. It is awful to see this former fit Marine and FBI agent, who headed up security for a major hospital in his retirement, failing pretty rapidly. I wasn’t even aware of this devastating disease before. So, really, what I wear in LA will be the least of my concerns once there. But it’s easier to obsess about that than what we will see once there.

We never heard NYE fireworks here, (too busy eating pizza and watching Celtics game;); but saw on our town Facebook page that some folks’ dogs reacted to the loud banging noises so they were somewhere. I agree that such loud local town extravagances are unnecessary to start the new year. I’m sure that there were loud bursts of noise, if not sparkly color, in our lake neighborhood. Once the fireworks start there on July 4th, the noise continues every late night for weeks. Our poor pooch suffered so.... I never even thought about it being gun shots, which it could well be up there. My mindset is sooooo Massachusetts! LOL

BTW...I promise not to post any more paella pix....just couldn't resist this last one since I thought it was the most colorful so fa. :) We are talking about having a beef braciole feast for our next Christmas dinner. I love it!

Tonight I’ll be sautéing chicken with lots of veggies to pair with farro and a salad. Back to our boring meals...

lacey - you shouldn't need to wear shorts in Los Angeles at this time of year - it will be cooler than you think, prob in the 60's-70's, then dropping at night. I am sorry about your brother, it has to be hard. I lost my brother about 18 months before I was diagnosed, he also had cancer, but a rare one - bile duct. Lewy Body Dementia was what Robin Williams was diagnosed with, before that I had not heard of it - it does sound terrible. eric, I am sorry that your mom, and your family, had to deal with it as well.

Dinner tonight was shrimp, red peppers, onion, julienned carrot, in a teriyaki type of sauce over brown rice. Not exciting, but it did the job, lol!

We went out for Italian tonight (neighborhood joint specializing in Barese/Pugliese, but mostly pan-southern-Italian). App was tomato foccaccia and baked clams (childhood comfort food). Then Caesar salad. Bob had farfalle (bow-tie pasta) with seared sea scallops in lemon-zest cream sauce. I had cozze (mussels) over linguine in classic white wine-garlic sauce. Yes, loads of leftovers!

Wow, Sandy.... you had wide ranging tastes in food even as a child! My childhood comfort food was a grilled cheese sandwich and green jello.

Tonight I’m making a chicken stir fry served over rice. Easy to make, and easy to serve in stages since my husband and I have totally different schedules tonight.

Been craving cheeseburgers, so DH ground some brisket and we wrapped them in lettuce. We’re stuffed but feel good about not hitting a drive thru. We don’t do New Years resolutions but have been using the daily dozen app as a guide to getting more veggies in and it’s been awesome 😀

Breakfast & dinner were the leftover scallops over farfalle; lunch was a leftover Caesar to which I added more lettuce (red leaf & romaine) and half of a purple "Kumato" tomato. Not sure about what to do for dessert...if anything. Maybe some tangerines, or bake an apple. Getting awfully bored with Christmas cookies & mini-baklava, and trying to steer clear of all the chocolate candy.

Last night's dinner was a pizza from the extra sourdough crust I made awhile back.

After the oven cooled down...when I took the stone from the oven, about 1/3 of the stone stayed put. :-(

Sharon wants to go to the store to get another pizza stone, so I guess yesterday's pizza turned out well.

Hmmm, Eric, I’ve never made, nor had, pizza with sour dough crust. Is it just more tangy? Sounds interesting! Sorry to hear about the pizza stone. I guess they can be a bit fragile given the high heat environment. I had one that I thought picked up a smell of old oil, so disposed of it, and never replaced it. How does one avoid that?

For the past two nights we’ve had that chicken vegetable toss with some rosemary powder and balsamic vinegar, along with farro and a cuke salad with horseradish dressing. Tonight we’re headed to the Celtics/Mavs game (poor Cs have their three best players on injured list, but am eager to see the new Mavs’ phenom, 19 year old, Luca Doncic, play) so, for dinner, I will likely have salmon in one of our three fave restaurants near there...translation, wherever we can get in!

Last two nights’ dinner inour house:
