Pregnant Women and Small Children

Hello everyone!

I just read through the January Rad posts and learned so much!

I expect I'll be going through Rads in February.

My daughter is expecting our first grandchild in April. I've read some things about not being around pregnant women or small children while going through radiation treatments. I'd be most interested in hearing from some of you veterans what the real story is on that.

While it will break my heart not to be near them, it would break it even more should I do anything at all that would put either of them at risk.

Many thanks to you all.

I worked around preschoolers during rads. Never heard anything about not doing that.

I asked my RO this exact question today.  She said the only time it's an issure to be around anyone is when you are actually getting the radiation treatment...other than that, it's no problem to be around pregnant women and children.

    peace and prayers,

    Tori

GabbyCal, if you're getting brachytherapy (radioactive pellets in an tube inserted in your breast) then it might be a problem for the week of treatment while the pellets are in. Othewrsise you're not radioactive and not a danger to anyone.

    Best of luck.

I have a 2 yr old and my rad onc told me that the only time you are radioactive is when you are actually in the tx room (unless you are have rad pellets inserted as Leah said). the other time you pose a danger to children and pregnant women is the first 48 hours after you have a PET scan. hope rads go well for you!
